Whether you just couldn’t wait to wear your new shoes before breaking them in – or you’re running your first marathon. The answer is: Paper tape.

You know, the medical tape sold in drugstores to hold on gauze? It’s thin and flimsy, but it can prevent blisters. In fact, it works better than powders, antiperspirants, lubricants, Band-Aids or adhesive pads. That’s according to ER physician Dr. Grant Lipman, who also treats endurance athletes who run 25 to 50 miles a day in every kind of climate you can think of.

Dr. Lipman and his colleagues tested paper tape as a method of blister prevention on over 120 runners participating in an ultra-marathon event through the Gobi Desert. They put tape on just one of each runner’s feet.

After the race, only 20% of the runners’ feet that had been taped had blisters. But 81% of the feet that hadn’t been taped were blistered.

So if you hate blisters, get some paper tape. If it works for ultra-marathoners, it’ll work for you.

When you think of someone falling and being injured at home – a senior citizen probably comes to mind. Well, younger adults are just as likely to be trip-and-fall victims – thanks to our cellphones! We’re all so busy looking down at our phones that we’re falling down the stairs, tripping over the cat, and slipping on throw rugs. In fact, over half of all walking-and-talking cellphone accidents happen at home! That’s according to the University of Maryland. And 1‑in‑5 at-home cellphone-related falls causes a concussion! So if you’re not going to watch your step – at least clear a path in the most used areas – like between the couch and the kitchen. So you don’t wind up breaking your neck.

We know sitting all day at work is bad for us. BUT here’s something it doesn’t do… it DOESN’T increase our appetite! And we’re no more likely to overindulge, or eat unhealthy, than we are if we were on our feet all day. Of course, we burn fewer calories sitting all day. But we don’t necessarily make worse food choices. So if sedentary behavior doesn’t influence our appetite or food choices – what does? Boredom and watching TV. Those are the two things that make the biggest impact on what we eat – and how much we eat.

You can re-energize yourself in 60 seconds. Just run your hands under cool water for one minute. Because a sudden change in temperature increases blood flow in your extremities. It also stimulates the release of noradrenaline, a hormone that boosts alertness and energy. And the effect lasts up to 2 hours!

Grab a pen, and write your worries on a piece of paper. Then, crumple it up – and toss it into the nearest wastebasket. Psychologists say this can ease the stress and strain because our brain links the act of tossing out our worries on paper – with eliminating actual negative thoughts inside our brain. This leaves us feeling calm and relaxed – and ready to move on, worry‑free.

You’ll have a 62% lower risk of developing malignant breast cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, women on a Mediterranean Diet, who consumed 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil a day, got the biggest benefit. It’s down to the oil’s antioxidants, which have been shown to kill cancer cells and halt tumor growth. So splash some extra virgin olive oil on your pasta, in your salad, and as a marinade with herbs on chicken or fish.

You could be suffering from estrogen overload. Researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson found that excess estrogen triggers activity in the brain’s anxiety center… which can cause stress, and symptoms of depression. So, try this: Eat some broccoli! It’s packed with plant compounds that speed up the metabolism of estrogen in the liver. Which can smooth out mood swings, boost your mood, and cut your risk of anxiety in half.

They come from clinical psychologist Jean Kristeller, who wrote “The Joy of Half A Cookie.”

Dr. Kristeller says, first: Relish the first bite of anything delicious. The first bite is always the best. And taste buds get fatigued after just a few bites. So savor the first bite to eat more mindfully. You’ll enjoy the flavor more – and need less food to feel satisfied.

Next, don’t think about what you CAN’T have – focus on what you CAN. So, instead of thinking “I can’t have French fries.” Think: “I get to have these delicious, fresh vegetables!” That simple switch changes your mindset from deprivation to indulgence.

Finally, to get on a healthy eating plan, ditch anything “enriched” and just eat the real thing. Foods are only enriched when the nutrients are removed – or nonexistent – due to processing, and need to be added back in. So instead of eating foods enriched with vitamins – eat foods that are loaded with vitamins in their natural state.

Having good neighbors is important…

You know that having close friends is one of the keys to longevity and wellbeing. But even being on good terms with your neighbors has benefits. Researchers from Rutgers University analyzed a 10-year study involving 1,000 adults. And they found having regular, positive contact with neighbors was linked to a greater sense of self-worth and purpose. Even if you just wave hello – or let a neighbor borrow your hedge clippers. It’s all down to the fact that our daily lives can be enriched by these seemingly minor encounters… which makes us feel like we’re part of a community, and that we add value to a larger social network – which has been proven to boost our health.

And all of a sudden, the number on the scale is going up. What gives? You can blame it on something called “dietary convergence.” That’s when you start eating like the people you’re living with. Now, if you moved in with a vegan, whose favorite foods are broccoli and tofu, you probably don’t have an issue with dietary convergence… because your vegan roommate is probably prompting you to eat healthier foods. But nutrition professor Lauren Dinour, at Montclair State University, says, what usually happens is you and your new living partner end up eating worse. Dinour says most men will pack on 4 pounds after tying the knot – women will gain 7 pounds in the first year. And the same is true for unmarried couples who live together. Just so you know.
