A rose by any other name… can conquer your nausea. According to the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, smelling the right scent can help relieve nausea and motion sickness. In their study, participants watched a video designed to make them feel queasy. One group smelled rose oil – another group smelled the scent of leather – another smelled nothing.
Well, the group that sniffed rose oil felt 50% less nauseous than the other two groups. The researchers say certain scents can conjure up powerful emotions… And if that emotional response is positive, it distracts the brain enough to ease motion sickness. And you don’t necessarily need rose oil. ANY pleasant scent will do the trick. The researchers say you can start with your favorite cologne or perfume – which hopefully elicits a positive sensory response for you.

Place a picture of a set of eyes near sinks. According to a study of people entering an intensive care unit, when there was a picture of eyes posted near the sink, people were twice as likely to wash their hands on the way in. That’s because the feeling of being watched makes people behave better and act more honestly. Researchers from Newcastle University in the U.K. say our brains are wired to lock in on faces and facial features. And we’re quick to tune into the feeling of someone watching us – and when they are, we automatically adjust our behavior.

When it comes to snack foods, how can you tell when you’re eating a single serving? Here’s an easy way to eyeball it:

Let’s start with chips. A standard serving is 12 regular-size tortilla chips.

For crackers – a serving is about 14 regular-size crackers.

Finally: For popcorn – one serving, without butter, is a generous 3-and-a-half cups.

Did you know that our mental powers decline 32% more slowly if we just read a book for about an hour every day? That’s according to researchers at Rush University Medical Center. They found that reading anything – from literature, to mysteries, to science fiction, to fluffy beach reads – helps preserve our memory… Because it keeps our brain active.

Shake up your work schedule, and take a random day off now and then. Research shows taking an occasional “mental health day” relieves stress, and lowers blood pressure – both of which lower your risk for a heart attack. Plus, it reboots the brain, reduces your risk for job burnout – and allows you to come back feeling more creative and productive. But make it a “real” day off by doing something you don’t normally do… like, treating yourself to a movie, visiting a friend in another town, or taking a new hike on a different trail.

Can you really sweat out toxins?

No, according to human physiology professor Dr. Juan del Coso. He says a tiny amount of toxin is released in sweat, but not enough for measurable health benefits. If we really need to purge toxins, our kidneys release it into our urine. And as far as sweating out toxins in a sauna – that may actually backfire. Because when we sweat profusely, our body thinks it should conserve water, so we pee LESS! So we end up hanging on to any toxins longer! If you really feel you have to detox, your best bet is to load up on produce and water. That’ll help move things through your system faster.

Because you can drink it AND use it for cocktails, salad dressing, and homemade mayonnaise. And pickle juice is good for you! Research in the journal Medicine And Science in Sports And Exercise found salty pickle juice relieves muscle cramps 37% faster than plain water. Another use for pickle juice? Heartburn relief! It may seem counterintuitive, since pickle juice contains vinegar, which is acidic. But it can help relieve acid reflux in a similar way to apple cider vinegar. Because sometimes, heartburn is caused by having too LITTLE stomach acid. Pickle juice can also help with constipation, since the vinegar stimulates digestive juices that help your body break down food.

If you want abs of steel, skip the crunches and planks, and do cardio! Yes, planks strengthen your core, but you won’t SEE that core without aerobic exercise. In fact, exercise scientists from Auburn University found people doing abs exercises for 6 weeks lost NO abdominal fat, because we can’t spot-reduce fat. But consistent aerobic exercise, like running or swimming, plus strength training and cutting calories DOES lead to weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.

Doing that can prompt you to be more active, and make exercise a part of your everyday life. That’s according to Bangor University in the UK. They found that putting a visual cue somewhere you’ll see it all the time makes people more likely to follow through and work out. It needs to be something you always use when you exercise – like your water bottle, ear-buds or running shoes. The physical reminder boosts activity in the brain region linked to organization and planning, and literally doubles your odds of becoming a regular exerciser.

Try rubbing your ears! Researchers at West Chester University in Pennsylvania found that stimulating the nerves in and around the ears triggers production of appetite-killing endorphins. So, every time you feel a craving coming on, firmly massage your earlobes, ear cartilage, and the surrounding skin for 60 seconds. The researchers say doing that at least 3 times a day can help you lose up to 6 pounds in a month.
