Some of our “healthy habits” aren’t as healthy as we think.

In fact, here are some habits that can backfire:

Habit #1: Doing chores when you get home from work. Like going on a cleaning spree as soon as we walk through the door. How can that be a bad thing? Because it keeps our stress hormone levels elevated. They’re high at work – during our commute – and then stay that way as we clean up at home. That can weaken our immune system and cause all sorts of health problems. That’s why psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo gives us permission to put our feet up and relax during the work-week…And save chores for the weekend.

The 2nd healthy-sounding habit that can backfire: Having small meals throughout the day – rather than 3 normal-sized meals. A lot of people think that if they do that, they’ll keep their energy up, and be less likely to overeat because they’ll never be ravenous. And in theory, that’s true… The problem is, people who eat several small meals tend to eat more because their food intake is harder to keep track of.

Here’s a surprising habit that isn’t as healthy as it seems: Washing our pillowcases every week. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, we’re wasting our time if we can’t remember the last time we also washed our actual pillows, too. Because dust mite allergies affect more than 1-in-10 people…And studies show that the greatest number of dust mites are found in the bedroom, because they feed on our sweat and dead skin cells. So, at least once a month, we need to wash our pillows in hot water – not just our pillowcases.

Thank your guitar teacher for those lessons; they could keep you from developing Alzheimer’s down the road. New research shows that amateur musicians have better memory and verbal skills as they age. They also have a better chance of fending off age-related dementia than nonmusical people.

According to the journal “Neuroscience,” watching anything intense, like scary movies or the nightly news, can make it harder to drift off.

Researchers explain that seeing intense images before falling asleep makes those unsettling images stick, which basically strengthens our memories of them. It also makes us more likely to dream about them, and even think about them the next day. So, researchers suggest avoiding those programs an hour before bed so they won’t affect your dreams or mood.

If you need a flatter stomach fast, try eating certain healthy foods.

For example:
If you need to de-bloat within days for a party, then eat artichokes, asparagus and watercress. Registered dietician Frances Roth says those are proven to flush out your system fast because they contain natural diuretics.

Another quick fix is foods high in potassium – like bananas, cooked spinach, sweet potatoes and white beans. They work because we retain water when our sodium and potassium levels are out of whack. But eating more potassium-rich foods maintains the balance and de-puffs our stomach. So eat more of these foods and stay away from tempting empty calorie snacks.

Change the way you breathe. New research shows that breathing deeply for 40 minutes after eating a huge meal lowers heart damaging blood sugar levels.
How? By reducing your heart rate, which triggers the release of extra insulin.

Eat more white produce. Things like garlic, leeks, onions, apples, pears, bananas, cauliflower, and cucumbers. Research found that the people who eat the most white fruits and vegetables – or those with white flesh – have a 52% lower risk of stroke.

Why white-fleshed fruits and veggies are beneficial isn’t known. One theory is that those foods are high in dietary fiber and antioxidants, which lower blood pressure or cholesterol, and can protect brain blood vessels or prevent clots from forming. But before you OD on the white flesh of a POTATO – they’re not on the list, because they’re considered a starch, not a vegetable.

Get your snacks during the previews! According to research, people consume more than 80% of their calories before the movie begins. Once it starts, people are more focused on the movie than their snacks, so they end up eating less.

Researchers from Columbia University found that well-rested people are better able to, and more likely to, turn down unhealthy foods than those who are sleep-deprived. And people who only sleep 4 hours eat 300 more calories per day.

It’s also up 32% in dogs, and 16% in cats…And that’s just in the last 5 years. Like the human version, pet diabetes is often linked to obesity.
Symptoms for dogs and cats include excessive urination and increased thirst. And experts say that early diagnosis is the key, so report any warning signs to your vet.

A cup of green tea could head-off your depression. People who drink 2 or 3 cups a day are 40% less likely to get depressed. It’s all down to the catechins – which are antioxidants found in high concentrations in green tea. They decrease stress hormones – which are associated with depression. But go for brewed, not bottled. You’ll get more catechins that way.
