According to child psychologists at Erasmus University Rotterdam, the more TV a 4-year-old child watches, the more likely they are to become a bully later on in school. And it doesn’t matter if it’s an educational TV show or not – the researchers say the lack of social interaction that goes along with watching TV leads to aggressive behavior.

Want to be LESS likely to eat when you’re relaxing in front of the TV? Watch a talk show! Whether it’s “Ellen,” “The Talk,” or “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Research in the Journal of the American Medical Association found we eat 98% LESS while watching a talk show compared to an exciting action show – which can trigger tension and mindless overeating. It’s because we need to pay closer attention to what people are saying on a talk show… so we’re more focused on listening and absorbing information, than absorbing calories through mindless eating.

…and wondered, “What’s wrong with me?” Well, nothing. But you are more likely than men to tear up for random reasons. According to the book Why Only Humans Weep, emotional tears are triggered by prolactin. And women naturally have more prolactin than men, because it triggers milk production after a baby is born. But even if you’re not pregnant or a mom, you still have higher levels of prolactin, making you more prone to crying.

We know sitting all day at work is bad for us. BUT here’s something it doesn’t do… it DOESN’T increase our appetite! And we’re no more likely to overindulge, or eat unhealthy, than we are if we were on our feet all day. Of course, we burn fewer calories sitting all day. But we don’t necessarily make worse food choices. So if sedentary behavior doesn’t influence our appetite or food choices – what does? Boredom and watching TV. Those are the two things that make the biggest impact on what we eat – and how much we eat.

Watching too many medical dramas on TV – like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Chicago Med” – can actually make you sick! A study from the University in Belgium found that those who watched the most medical shows on TV were more likely to be afraid of catching the illnesses they saw on the show. And the more people stressed about getting sick, the more likely they were to actually become ill – since stress has a negative impact on the immune system.

To squeeze more exercise into your day, when you’re binge-watching your favorite TV show… think of it like a drinking game. But instead of taking a shot, do some exercise. So every time Kramer makes a crazy entrance into Jerry’s apartment on Seinfeld, you do 5 jumping jacks… Or every time someone smokes on Mad Men, do 5 squats. If you watch every episode of Mad Men, and do 5 squats per cigarette, your glutes will have done 4,710 squats.

Sit down together as a family at the dinner table. Kids who chow down in front of the tube tend to EXTEND their mealtime for as long as they’re watching! So, they’ll keep eating even when they aren’t hungry anymore. So, make it a rule – dinner, then TV time.

Who says we need to hit the gym for hours and hours? Because a new study shows that short bursts of activity can be just as good for us as spending hours at the gym. How short are we talking? According to researchers at Oregon State University, just two minutes of moderate activity – like pacing while talking on the phone, doing housework, or doing sit-ups during TV commercials – is enough to lower our blood pressure and cholesterol levels. And if we squeeze in enough short bursts of activity to get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, researchers say that’ll improve our health as much as a traditional workout.
