The claim is that alkaline water, with a higher pH and altered chemical structure, is easier to absorb, which facilitates hydration. Not so fast… Health professor Dr. Dan Heil from Montana State University says there’s no solid scientific data to support those claims. Because our body neutralizes pH on its own, nothing we drink can affect our pH. However, alkaline water is a little sweeter than standard water. So if that helps increase your water intake, it certainly couldn’t hurt to sip it.

If your favorite movie genre is horror or thrillers – get the SMALL popcorn. Because research from Cornell University says movie-goers are more likely to munch while watching scary movies. Why? Blame the stress from the edge-of-your-seat action! It increases the stress hormone cortisol, which prompts us to eat more in case we need energy to run from Freddy Krueger! Cortisol also makes us crave fatty and salty foods – not kale and blueberries. So if you’re going to watch horror movies – get the small popcorn. Cornell’s experts say small portions can be just as satisfying, both physically and psychologically, as servings with 7-times as many calories.

Why do you have a headache?

It could be those LEFTOVERS you ate! Chicken, fish, beef and pork contain tyramine – which makes the blood vessels in our brain expand and contract… And can trigger head pain in 40% of migraine sufferers. And the amount of tyramine in cooked meat continues to increase, as the amino acids in the leftovers continue to break down. That means freshly-roasted beef probably won’t have enough tyramine to cause a headache… But using it for a sandwich a couple days later just might. That’s why headache expert Dr. Merle Diamond recommends avoiding leftovers more than 48 hours old. Or freezing your leftovers, because the cold halts the breakdown of amino acids.

Don’t be afraid to shake people’s hands – that’s NOT what’s going to make you sick. Johns Hopkins researchers say germs on hands get quickly embedded in your skin oils, so they aren’t transferred to other people when you shake hands. What does transfer germs? Putting your hands to your face – and touching your eyes, nose or mouth! In fact, you can cut your risk of infections nearly in HALF by keeping your hands away from your face. Because even if you touch something contaminated – if you don’t touch your face, the germs won’t get into your system.

You can burn calories without traditional exercise. Take your kid’s backpack – or your heavy handbag – and carry those 10 extra pounds around. Throw in a couple hills, and you’ll burn about 415 calories per hour at a regular walking pace. That’s 57 calories more than you’d burn strolling without the backpack or handbag.

What’s more dangerous: A playground jungle gym or your office chair? When it comes to fatal falls, one out of every 3,700 falls from a piece of playground equipment results in death. But you’re 85 times MORE likely to fall to your death from a chair. That’s according to “The Book of Odds.” It’s because people falling off their chairs are usually older, and a broken hip at an older age is more likely to result in death than a child breaking a bone falling from a jungle gym.

Here’s a weird way to improve the health of your mouth… Put a drop of oregano oil on your toothbrush, with your toothpaste! Oregano oil is antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic. You can kill germs in your mouth by rubbing a couple drops on your gums, adding it to water to make a mouthwash, or putting a drop on top of your toothpaste, and brushing as usual.

It’s like eating in front of the TV – you’re distracted. But if it’s desktop dining or nothing, do this: Bring real silverware from home. According to the University of Oxford, people who use real utensils eat less because they enjoy their food 10% MORE! That’s because the heavier utensils send a subliminal message that your meal is higher quality. A heavier fork also helps you slow down and be a more mindful eater. Put it all together and you’ll end up eating less, while being more satisfied.

When bedtime rolls around, if you’re not tired, DON’T go to bed and lie there awake… You’ll only condition yourself to associate your bed with staring at the ceiling and frustration. But you should associate it with peaceful slumber. So instead, stay up half an hour – or an hour – later. But set your alarm for the usual time the next day. According to the Annals Of Internal Medicine, that’ll help you get sleepy before you hit the hay.

When you’re applying eye cream, dab it on from the outer corners of your eyes inward. According to dermatologist Leslie Baumann, that’s the direction your lymph fluids flow, so it encourages the fluids to keep moving and decreases puffiness.
