Swap your cold cereal for warm oatmeal in the morning. Even though they’re both made with oats, and have the same amount of calories per serving – the warm oatmeal will help you feel fuller for hours afterward. That’s because we perceive warm foods as more satisfying. Plus, oatmeal has a type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan, which slows down digestion to help us feel full much longer.

Are you stressing out over a big decision you have to make? Think things over while relaxing in a hot bath or Jacuzzi. Scientists at USC say making an important decision while you’re stressed, whether it’s the day-to-day kind, or stress due to that particular decision, it makes you more likely to focus on the possible negative outcomes. But if you wait until you’re calm to weigh the pros and cons, you’ll make a better choice, and be much happier with your decision.

Clip some coupons. Research from Claremont Graduate University found every time we see a good deal – and anticipate saving money – our brain gets a shot of feel-good oxytocin and dopamine – even if we never actually buy the item. That explains why researchers found clipping coupons, or visiting coupon websites, can trigger a 38% jump in happiness levels. Which is similar to the mood boost we get from receiving a gift.

Microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba says, it’s pretty gross! You can’t see it with the naked eye, but every flush sprays germs out like a Fourth of July firework. It’s the “aerosol effect,” which showers everything within a 5-foot radius with germs and viruses. And yes, Dr. Gerba says you could get physically ill from leaving the lid up while flushing.

Because even with a low-flow toilet, the aerosol effect spews thousands of little droplets into the air. So no matter what type of toilet you’re using, flush with the lid down.

Because they’re photosensitizers – which make the skin more vulnerable to UV light. Two common types are heart and acne meds. And researchers at Dartmouth say taking them for at least 6 months makes you 50% more likely to develop skin cancer. So, see if your pills say: “Stay out of the sun.” And if they ARE photosensitizers, ask your doctor for something similar that won’t make you more vulnerable to UV light.

Even on a hot day, when you’re sweating like a beast – you most likely DON’T need to increase your salt intake to replace what you’ve lost. That’s because most of us consume more sodium than we need on a daily basis. The only people who might need extra salt are those who work outdoors, or exercise for 3 or 4 hours at a time. And for those people, a V-8 juice should do it.

We should be more afraid of vending machines than sharks!

According to the New England Aquarium, the risk of dying from a shark attack is roughly 1-in-250-million. But the risk of dying in a vending machine accident is roughly 1-in-112 million. So, a vending machine is roughly twice as lethal as a shark! Why are vending machines so deadly? The typical scenario is this: A machine takes someone’s money and malfunctions. The customer then shakes the machine to free the snack, and the machine tips over and crushes them. So bottom line: Fear the vending machine more than the shark.

That’s according to the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers analyzed the diets of kids from age 6 to 8. And those who ate the most fresh produce, fish, whole grains, and unsaturated fats had the best scores in reading, writing, and comprehension. And those who loaded up on red meat, sugar, fried foods, and processed baked goods had the most trouble reading. The researchers believe it’s because the nutrients in a healthy diet boost brain health – especially in young children whose bodies and brains are still developing. And the nutrients give kids the stamina to stay focused.

Take your next class from another instructor. To master any skill – from guitar to computer programming – you’ll get better, faster, by learning from different teachers. The University of British Columbia found sticking with the same instructor holds us back. Because, even if you’re being taught the same material or techniques, each instructor adds a different way of thinking about things – which speeds up learning and mastering a skill.

It turns out, that’s not a rude way of dismissing someone. It’s a way to help someone boost their immunity! That’s because being out in nature exposes us to essential plant oils that have anti-microbial compounds. And when we inhale them, those chemicals keep us healthy by increasing white blood cell levels. So go take a hike. An hour on the trails once a week will do the trick.
