By now we all know that tanning is dangerous. Because research shows just one session in a tanning bed – or one sunburn – increases our odds of melanoma by 20%. Even if you tan and don’t burn, dermatologists from Johns Hopkins say any browning of the skin is sun damage. And a tan will NOT protect you from sun damage, DNA damage or skin cancer. It’s like having no sunscreen on at all. But new research says tanning is even more dangerous when we’re drinking alcohol. In fact, researchers found having just half a drink a day raises our risk for melanoma from UV exposure by an additional 20%, compared with people who rarely or never drink. That’s because alcohol increases skin’s sensitivity to light, making us more likely to burn. Bottom line: Use sunscreen… and skip the poolside cocktails.

almonds, Connie Sellecca, conniesellecca, do you have heartburn?, eat almonds for dessert, heartburn, heartburn relief, intelligence for your life, intelligenceforyourlife, prevent heartburn, Stanford University, stop heartburn

Here’s a quick trick for relieving heartburn just as effectively as over-the-counter meds: Eat 4 almonds at the end of every meal and snack! That’s according to the latest from Stanford University scientists. The reason? Because almonds contain healthy plant fats, which help speed up digestion, and quickly neutralize stomach acid. Almonds also reduce pressure on the stomach valve, so acid is less likely to splash up into the esophagus.

Again, eat 4 almonds as your “dessert” after every meal and snack, and your heartburn may be history.

We’re more likely to get in a car crash if our commute to work includes driving past a high school. That’s according to a recent Liberty Mutual Insurance survey of 3,500 students in grades ten, eleven and twelve. It found that a-third of teens often drive to school when they’re DROWSY. And, as we’ve said many times, driving drowsy is as dangerous as driving drunk. Bottom line… Be extra vigilant when driving during school hours – or risk being hit by a sleepy teen!

Here’s how to eliminate the redness: Grab some chamomile or green tea, dunk the teabag in cold water, and press it to your face for 60-seconds. According to research at Case Western Reserve University, it’ll reduce the redness fast, because the anti-inflammatory compounds in tea constrict capillaries, which reduces blood flow under the skin.

You can get a boost just by eating broccoli! Norwegian researchers found people who ate a cup of broccoli a day saw their energy and stamina jump by up to 33% in just one week. Because broccoli’s antioxidants, chlorophyll, and sulforaphane, help our muscle cells absorb fatty acids from our bloodstream, and turn them into fatigue-fighting and metabolism-boosting ATP cells. The key type of energy used by our brain and muscles.

Bottom line: Eating a cup of broccoli a day could give you 33% more energy.

Ever heard wearing white helps protect against skin damage, by reflecting sunlight? Well, a new Australian study found white clothing – like a cotton t‑shirt – is the equivalent of SPF 7 sunscreen… which means, it blocks less than a tenth of the sun’s harmful UV rays. And if your white clothing gets wet, your UV protection gets cut in half.

Bottom line: Always use sunscreen, even if you’re decked out head-to-toe in white.

When you go on vacation, even if the plane has Wi-Fi, don’t use it! Positive psychologist Michelle Gielan has found that travelers need 12 to 24-hours to get the health-boosting benefits of complete relaxation. And if you wait until you reach your destination to unplug, you’re essentially shortening your trip. So the second you get on the plane, start to unwind. That means all activities should reflect your vacation mindset. You’ll get into relaxation-mode more quickly.

To keep your mind sharp as you get older, try this trick from Dr. Ian Robertson at the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas: Bounce a tennis ball against a wall, and catch it with one hand… then, try the other. Or bounce a ping-pong ball on a paddle. That works your hand-eye coordination and gives your brain a good workout. And the smaller the ball, the harder your brain will work.

You might reconsider after you read this: Microbiologist Dr. Anthony Hilton of the UK’s Aston University says the average family car is a rolling dining room that’s rarely cleaned. And that leaves the interior covered with illness-causing germs, which can trigger everything from skin infections to vomiting. And the bugs are mostly found on the steering wheel, gearshift, and door handles. If you allow food in your car, Dr. Hilton recommends treating your vehicle as an extension of your home. And make sure you clean and disinfect it at least once a week.

Summer colds ARE worse than winter ones. And they last longer too. That’s because different types of viruses are responsible for them – and they can create body aches, fever, and stomach trouble, in addition to the classic respiratory symptoms. And if you get a cold during the summer – it can make your allergy symptoms worse too. So if you get a summer cold, rest, drink plenty of liquids – and try taking an antihistamine, too.
