A study from the University of Georgia found that people’s stress hormones were slashed after watching their favorite shows. Sure, meditation and yoga can also lower stress levels – but unless you’re really “in” to those things, feeling the pressure to do something “healthy” can prevent your stress from dropping. So, if you’re really into certain TV shows – don’t feel guilty anymore – enjoy! Because this study found that getting absorbed in the plot and characters of a show takes your mind off your own stresses, which can go a long way toward helping you relax.

Hum before you blow!
That’s because hard blowing can trigger “reflux nasal congestion” – or swelling of the sinuses that can trap infection-causing mucus and keep you sick longer… That’s according to ear, nose and throat doctor, Jordan Josephson.

Instead, hum in a low tone. The vibrations will stimulate the hairs in your nose, helping them whisk away mucus down the back of your throat. Then, gently blow your nose to clear out the debris.

What do yogurt, sauerkraut and miso soup have in common? They can clear up your skin! Numerous studies found adding good bacteria to our digestive tract can crowd out the bad bacteria that seeps through our pores and causes breakouts. Probiotics also reduce inflammation, which can make our skin erupt. So try eating a serving a day of yogurt with live-and-active cultures, sauerkraut or miso soup.

It’s the start of the flu season… And if someone is sick, don’t let them borrow your phone. Or if you do, clean it before you use it again. Gadgets with glass touch-screens carry 18 times more bacteria than a toilet’s flush handle! And a recent Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a glass surface, at least 30% of that virus will end up on your fingertips!

They mean you’re more creative! That’s according to the University of Montreal. For their study, they asked people who have regular nightmares to complete creativity tests. Participants also had their brains monitored while they slept. The result? People who have frequent nightmares also have a dreaming life that triggers the parts of the brain that govern creativity and positivity. And that creativity isn’t limited to just sleep. They also think more creatively while they’re awake.

Before you add a wool blanket to your bed – or cozy up with one on the couch, know this: It could be teeming with dust mites. According to microbiologist Dr. David Clarke, when both wool and cotton were exposed to microscopic mites, the wool attracted 42% MORE mites than the cotton. That’s because wool has a deeper pile, with more twists in the fibers… which allows mites to crawl inside, hunker down and multiply. So before you get out the wool blanket, wash it and allow it to dry completely. Then repeat the washing and drying every 2 weeks.

Have you ever had sore muscles and treated them with something like Tiger Balm? You know, with that tingling sensation? Well, topical ointments can relieve pain by up to 28% – and here’s why… According to pain expert Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, pain signals and temperature signals run along the same nerve fibers – like a telephone line. So when you apply an ointment with a tingly, cooling sensation – or heat sensation – it’s like a telephone signal with crossed wires. The call doesn’t go through – and in this case, the pain doesn’t go through. And Dr. Teitelbaum says, if you keep those muscle pain ointments in the fridge, you’ll double their pain relief capability.

Think of two happy events in the past – like a birthday or a compliment from a stranger – and two happy events you’re looking forward to. University of Michigan researchers say imagining good times triggers similar emotions to what we experience DURING those good moments. And thinking about the past and future makes us feel like our lives, overall, are good.

Make sure they can’t access any cleaning supplies – or get under the sink where you may keep chemicals. Because 1-year-olds are more likely to suffer permanent eye damage from chemical burns than people of any other age! That’s according to the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Previously researchers thought young adults were most at risk of eye damage from splashing chemicals, due to their workplace environments. But a 1-year-old is twice as likely to suffer eye burns as an adult. And babies are 13 times more likely to suffer eye damage than 7-year-olds. Chemical burns are the worst type of eye injury you can get… Because the longer the chemical is in the eye, the more likely it is to result in permanent damage. And babies are most likely to grab a spray bottle of cleaner. They get fascinated with the spray mechanism. The good news is – this is completely preventable by putting cleaning supplies on a high shelf – or locking them up.

When you’re walking, go a little faster sometimes, then go a little slower…… and keep switching it up. According to the journal Biology Letters, varying your walking speed burns 20% more calories than strolling along at a steady pace.
