You may not even be aware of it, but psychologist Dr. Susan Bartell says YES! Here are a few of the things that can bring you down – and what to do about them.

#1: Family heirlooms. Dr. Bartell says we feel guilty getting rid of them because they’re supposed to hold memories. But instead, they can weigh us down emotionally and cause physical clutter. So, Dr. Bartell says, let those things go. Ask another family member if they want it. If not – and it’s not “Antiques-Roadshow”-worthy – get rid of it.

What else could be bumming you out in your own home? Heavy drapes! Their physical weight and the way they block light can make a home feel old, sad, and tired.

Finally, old paperwork can make us depressed. It’s a constant reminder of bills and obligations. So shred anything you don’t need, and make a point of filing things away. That way, the sight of paperwork won’t drag you down emotionally.

Soak them at two different temperatures. In other words, put them in water as cold as you can stand for 10 to 15 minutes… then put your feet into hot water for the same length of time. And continue until your feet feel better. Podiatrist Dr. Leslie Campbell says that alternately constricts and dilates blood vessels, and helps flush away the fluid that causes swelling and that dog-tired, on-your-feet-all-day feeling. And to draw out even more excess fluids? Add Epsom salts to the water.

If you feel achy, fire up Netflix and watch a tear-jerker movie. University of Oxford scientists found having a good cry during a movie can ease a sore back or achy joints. That’s because crying helps eliminate stress chemicals. Tears also flood the body with pain-killing endorphins. And people who watched a tear-jerker had an 18% higher pain tolerance afterward.

Should avocados come with a warning label?

According to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons, yes! In fact, so many people are getting cut slicing avocados in a cupped hand, ER doctors call it “avocado hand.” And just one slip of the knife can damage tendons and nerves, requiring surgery and months to heal. Even then, some people never fully regain use of their hand.

So how can you avoid injury? Slice avocados on a cutting board. If you DO get cut, plastic surgeon Dr. Sheel Sharma says put pressure on the wound and raise your arm above your head. If the bleeding won’t stop, you can’t bend your finger, or you feel numbness – which is a sign of nerve damage – head to your local ER.

Which is worse… Drinking coffee through a straw or from a cup?

Believe it or not, sipping through a straw is worse. A lot of people do it so they won’t stain their teeth. But dermatologist Carolyn Jacob says, the coffee is going to swirl around your teeth anyway. But the straw can cause lip wrinkles. That’s because repetitive movements, like pursing your mouth, break down collagen – which is what keeps skin firm. So drink from the cup instead – wait 30 minutes for your tooth enamel to re-harden, and then brush or chew sugarless gum to prevent stains.

Put your phone on silent while driving!

Going for a drive? Put your phone on silent. Because just having the phone ring, even if you don’t answer, is a distraction! According to the Journal of Environmental Psychology, that’s because we’re so programmed to reach for our phone to see who’s calling it hijacks our thought process – even if we don’t pick up. And that takes our attention off the road, making us more likely to miss a pedestrian stepping off the curb, or the idiot about to run a red light right through the middle of our left turn. So, to stay safer behind the wheel, leave your phone on silent.

Get outside on your lunch hour – or at least hang out by a sunny window. Getting just 15 minutes of sunshine a day can cut your cancer risk up to 36%. That’s because sunshine helps your body create vitamin D – and vitamin D shuts down abnormal cells before they can become cancerous.

Researchers found we tend to underestimate how much we’ll enjoy a workout. Because we’re focused on the beginning, when we’re thinking, “Man, I don’t want to exercise!” – instead of how good we’ll feel once we’re done. The study also found the happiest people schedule their favorite exercises first. Because looking forward to something fun motivates them to get going.

If you regularly get less than 7 hours of sleep, it could be affecting your brain… and raising your risk for age-related memory decline, or Alzheimer’s! Research in HealthDay News says that’s because during sleep, our brain systems have a chance to sweep away plaque that blocks nerve signals, and triggers disease. But without adequate sleep, that clean-up process gets cut short, which can eventually lead to memory loss and overall cognitive decline.

Long day at work? De-stress with rituals!

Here’s great advice for de-stressing after work, from Harvard business school professor, Dr. Teresa Amabile. She says, think about how you set up your day. For example, you say ‘hi’ to the security guard, grab a coffee, and check your email. So, create another ritual at the end of the day to decompress. For example, maybe you listen to your favorite music on the way home, take the dog for a quick walk, and have a relaxing mug of tea. The more you engage in a set pattern of rituals, the quicker you’ll relax and detach.
