Look at something containing “fractals,” or repeating patterns… Like how a flower’s petals are all the same shape, getting bigger as they go from the center to the outer edge. There are also repeating patterns in leaves, seashells and ocean waves. Researchers found repeating patterns calming, so looking at a natural fractal for a few minutes can reduce stress by up to 60%! No natural fractals around? Try the app FRACT.AL or go to FractalFoundation.org.

If you and your significant other fight and bicker all the time – not only is your relationship in trouble, so is your heart!

According to UC Berkeley, constantly fighting causes your cardiovascular system to overload… and that can damage your blood vessels. The result? High blood pressure. But avoiding fights isn’t much better. The researchers found that stonewalling – or giving your partner the silent treatment – caused muscle tension, headaches and sore joints. So, choose your battles wisely, let some things go, and when you need to hash things out – do it in a calm, rational way. Remember, you’re together for a reason. And having a loving relationship is definitely GOOD for your heart health!

It’s not unusual to feel nauseous when the weather gets really hot. It happens when our body is trying to regulate our core temperature. But you can cut that queasy feeling by sniffing some lemon essential oil or a fresh cut lemon. Stanford University researchers say that when our body struggles to keep our core temperature lower than the temperature outside, it can over-stimulate the nerves in the area of the brain linked to nausea. But taking 6 slow, deep whiffs of lemon essential oil can calm those nerves… and make our stomach feel calmer in as little as a minute.

Registered dietician Kristen Smith says one serving of ice cream provides 10% of the calcium we need daily. And calcium is proven to reduce tension and anxiety. Plus, the fat in ice cream helps our body absorb minerals and nutrients that help regulate mood. Which is why people who eat full-fat foods have lower rates of depression than people on low-fat diets. So how much ice cream can we have daily? One half-cup. That’s about the size of a tennis ball. If you’re watching your calories, get slow-churned ice cream. It contains more air, which means fewer calories per serving.

Here’s the best way to fight stress, and calm your worried mind: Write your concerns on a piece of paper, crumple it up, and make a three-pointer into the nearest wastebasket. Psychologists say this eases stress and strain because our brain links the act of tossing out our worries on paper with eliminating actual negative thoughts inside our brain, leaving us feeling calm and relaxed, and ready to move on, worry-free.

Sure, it can expose you to fine art – but it can also slash your stress by 60%! That’s according to IULM University in Milan, Italy. The researchers measured people’s levels of the stress hormone cortisol, before and after they visited a museum. And they found just spending a few minutes admiring paintings or sculpture dramatically reduced stress. Their cortisol dropped 60%! Plus, the study participants said they felt happier and calmer. It works because, when we’re looking at art, we’re in the moment. And Stanford psychologists say that looking at something awe-inspiring makes us more patient and unselfish, and it makes time seem to slow down. Art also fills us with positive emotions, which lower levels of inflammatory proteins, reducing stress and lowering our heart rate.

You know how pro athletes visualize themselves sinking a putt – or hitting a home run – and it can help them achieve those results in real life? Well, we can use visualization to manage our emotions, too. Dr. Stephan Kosslyn is a neuroscientist, and he says, imagining yourself doing something strengthens the connection between the body and the brain. So, let’s say every time your boss talks to you it makes you so anxious you can hardly think straight. Try this: Picture an encounter with the boss. Hear her condescending voice, picture how she stands, and the way she looks at you over the rim of her glasses. The point is to trigger your anxious response – and then breathe deeply and slowly and calm yourself down. Practice that trick half a dozen times – and the next time your boss says, “Come to my office I want to have a word with you,” your body and brain will be primed to stay cool, calm and collected.

If you’re obsessing over something negative that happened – go find a park and take a walk. According to Stanford University researchers, spending time in nature actually decreases blood flow to the part of the brain that we use to dwell on things. Which can make you calmer in just minutes.

It makes the perfect bedtime snack. The carbs in cereal increase levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which makes us feel happy and relaxed. And the milk’s tryptophan content converts to serotonin, too. Plus, there’s calcium and magnesium in milk, both of which are calming.
