People who follow a vegetarian diet cut their risk of developing some cancers in half. That’s according to the British Journal of Cancer. The researchers found people who didn’t eat meat were 45% less likely to get cancerous blood conditions, like leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And overall, vegetarians were 12% less likely to get any form of cancer.

Parsley! It’s a top source of two cancer-fighting compounds: apigenin and luteolin. And when those two plant compounds are combined, they help prevent breast cancer and slow the growth of existing cancer cells. So, try using parsley in salads, smoothies, and as an herb on grilled chicken or fish.

Maintain a healthy weight! According to the Cancer Prevention Center at the University of Texas, being overweight is on track to overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of cancer. And according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that the heaviest women had death rates from cancer that were 62% higher than women in a healthy weight range. In fact, one-third of all cancer deaths in the U.S. each year are linked to poor diet and too little physical activity. So what is it about being overweight that makes it a cancer risk? It’s the fact that excess fat changes hormonal activity. It causes higher levels of insulin, growth factors, inflammation, and gender hormones – and that increases your odds of developing cancer. So at your next doctor’s appointment, ask if they have any recommendations for your weight. Are you at a healthy weight? What should you aim for? Because getting to a healthy weight will greatly reduce your cancer risk.

According to Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Karin Michels, a lot of women don’t realize they’re lugging around health hazards in their handbags. For example:

Do you carry hand sanitizer in your purse? Dr. Michels says it’s great to kill germs on the go. But a lot of sanitizers contain triclosan – a chemical linked to tumor growth in animals. So, only use alcohol-based sanitizers, and ditch the ones made with triclosan.

Then, is your handbag stuffed with old receipts? Researchers say most printed receipts are coated with a chemical called “BPA”. And it rubs off on our hands and is absorbed through our skin. We can tell you that BPA has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes, cancer, and infertility. So, handle receipts as little as necessary… and see if the cashiers can email or text your receipts, instead.

If you like to have a cigarette occasionally, say with a glass of whiskey, or at a poker game, there are consequences! The National Cancer Institute studied 300-thousand people, looking specifically at the risks of “light” smoking. The result: People who smoked less than one cigarette a day were 9 times more likely to die of lung cancer, and twice as likely to die of heart disease, compared to lifetime nonsmokers. But the good news is, it’s never too late to quit! Researchers found the risk of an early death was greatly reduced once people quit totally. And the younger people were when they quit, the longer they lived.

You need sleep more than you need food. You can survive two weeks without food, but 10 days without sleep will kill you.

Next: All-nighters make you feel drunk. Going 16 hours without sleep makes you feel as loopy and out of it as if you’d had a couple beers.

Finally: Messing with your sleep cycle can cause cancer. The evidence is so strong that the World Health Organization considers poor sleep quality and a lack of sleep carcinogens.

B3-Nicotinamide2-wp

Here’s a relatively cheap way to drastically reduce your risk of skin cancer: Pop a vitamin B3 supplement. The University of Sydney found a derivative of B3, nicotinamide, can prevent up to a quarter of non-melanoma skin cancers.

Nicotinamide is the water-soluble, active form of vitamin B3. It’s also commonly found in meat, fish, nuts and mushrooms.

And in a study of nearly 400 people, those who took the B3 supplement slashed their risk of developing basal and squamous cell carcinomas by nearly 25%. And those two types of skin cancers account for 80% of ALL skin cancer cases. The study used a 500‑milligram supplement – but talk to your doctor about it first. And make sure you’re taking the active form of B3 with nicotinamide. That’s what turns off cancer-causing pathways.

Here’s another reason to stick with caffeine: It may slow your biological aging process! That’s from the Stanford School of Medicine. The reason? Because most of us tend to develop inflammation in our tissues, veins, and arteries as we age, which can lead to heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis and even depression. But the metabolites in caffeine help minimize inflammation. Bottom line: Coffee may be the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth.

There are 8 more reasons to get down to a healthy weight. Because obesity has been linked to 8 additional cancers. After reviewing more than one-thousand studies, the New England Journal of Medicine found “excess body fat” is linked to an increased risk of developing gastric, liver, gallbladder, pancreatic, ovarian, thyroid, blood and brain cancers. Obese people were found to have nearly 2 times the risk of liver cancer, 5 times the risk for esophageal cancer, and 7 times more for uterine cancer. And as your weight goes up, so does the risk. Those are 8 good reasons to get healthy!

Which is healthier: A propane grill or charcoal?

propane-vs-charcoal-wp

Scientists say: Propane has the edge. Here’s why… In studies, meat grilled over charcoal contained more carcinogens – or cancer-causing compounds – than meat grilled over propane flames. That’s because when fat drips from the meat, it creates a toxic smoke that coats what you’re cooking. And charcoal makes more smoke than propane. Plus, charcoal burns hotter – so there’s more char on the meat, which is also carcinogenic. Now, a propane grill isn’t harmless, it’s just less harmful. So to make any cookout healthier, trim the fat off your meats, so there are fewer drippings. Next: Marinate your meat before cooking. By soaking burgers, chicken or steaks in a marinade of lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, and herbs, you can cut the formation of cancer-causing compounds by 90%. Finally, flip your burgers more often. That also reduces the amount of carcinogens that form.
