Research in Psychological Science found that as our stress levels rise, our body produces more of the appetite-regulating hormone ghrelin, which boosts hunger. And lots of studies have shown when we’re stressed out, we’re more likely to reach for high-fat, high-sugar treats, than something healthy…… which significantly raises our risk for weight gain and depression. And while we can’t change how our body reacts to stress, we can change the foods we keep on hand. So, stock up on more vegetables and Greek yogurt, instead of chips and ice cream! That way, you’re less likely to blow your diet after your next argument.

There’s a link between acne severity and low levels of zinc – an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial mineral… And when we don’t have enough, the bacteria on our face causes pimples. So, eat more zinc-rich foods, like roasted nuts, beans, whole grains, beef, poultry and oysters. In fact, just two oysters provide your daily value of zinc.

First, you won’t typically get jet lag unless you cross two time zones. If you have a trip coming up that does, before leaving, start operating on the time zone to which you’re traveling. Get up and go to sleep at the correct hour for your destination – and plan your meals according to that schedule too.

If you can choose your seat on the flight, try for a window seat. That way, you can adjust the window shade depending on the direction you’re traveling. Get more light if you’re arriving during the day – close the shade to reduce light exposure if you’ll be arriving at night.

Also in a window seat you’ll have an easier time sleeping. It’s easier to prop up a pillow next to the window – and you won’t have to get up every time your seatmates need the restroom.

Lastly, skip the in-flight movie. Watching a movie stimulates you more than it relaxes you. And can keep you from getting much-needed rest.

Do we really need to cool down after a workout?

Yes, but NOT because it helps our body recover faster. It’s because doing a cool-down makes us ENJOY our workout more. Kinesiologists from Iowa State University say people who do a cool-down remember their workouts as more pleasant than exercisers who don’t cool down. And it makes them more likely to continue working out. That’s because we tend to remember the LAST part of an experience more vividly than any other part. So if the last section of our workout was a feel-good cool-down session, we’ll think the ENTIRE workout was more pleasant. So what about any physical benefits? Well, doing a cool-down – say by walking after a run – can reduce the chances of dizziness or fainting. Because blood tends to pool in our lower extremities if we work out hard, and then stop cold. So spend 5 to 10 minutes doing an easier version of your workout – or some simple stretches – to get the mental and physical benefits.

Are you a hypochondriac?

According to a recent study, women are bigger hypochondriacs than men… That means, we frequently think something’s wrong when it isn’t. But all that worrying pays off in the long run! Since we women tend to worry more about our aches and pains, we also tend to seek medical help sooner – so we’re less likely to die from a serious illness. That’s compared to men, who are more likely to ignore things until they get really serious.

A Harvard Medical School study found people who ate fresh and dried chili peppers at least 3 times a week were 14% less likely to die prematurely…… Specifically from heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. Compared to those who rarely ate spicy foods. That’s because peppers help lower cholesterol, inflammation and oxidative stress – and help grow healthy bacteria in our digestive tract.

That shooting pain or weakness that radiates from the lower back, through the hip and rear, and down one leg. An estimated 1‑in‑20 people will develop sciatica at some point… And it comes from the fact that we have a major nerve running from our spine to both feet, called the sciatic nerve… And if something presses AGAINST that nerve – like a herniated disc in our back – we’re going to feel pain.
The good news is that more than 80% of people who develop the condition say their pain goes away when they focus on their posture. Because when we slouch, we put pressure on the disks and nerves in our back, which increases the risk for problems. So, stand up straight – the straighter the better!
Also, guys, you can avoid sciatica by ditching the overstuffed wallet in your back pocket. Because sitting unevenly twists your spine in a way that can pinch off the sciatic nerve…
But if you’ve tried improving your posture and you’re still feeling pain, talk to your doctor… because you may have a more serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Look at a picture of loved ones with their arms wrapped around you. According to the University of Exeter, looking at a picture in which you feel cared for reduces your response to stress – and increases feelings of calm and wellbeing. The researchers say seeing loving actions reminds us we have secure attachments and social support… which makes tough times more manageable.

How many miles do you think you can run? Answering questions like that can enhance your workout. Dr. Jane McGonigal is a performance studies expert – and she says simply making a prediction in your head triggers production of the feel-good chemical dopamine… which can help you work harder without feeling like you’re exerting yourself more. Because the increased dopamine gives you a bigger sense of determination – and distracts your mind from focusing on the effort you’re making. So just before you start your run, guesstimate how long it’ll take to do your first mile. You’ll end up pushing yourself to make that time, or beat it.

Once you sip a milkshake, you aren’t likely to stop:

So what is it that makes a milkshake so irresistible… the sugar, the fat, or the flavor? Researchers at the Seattle VA Medical Center say it’s the sweet stuff. Unlike fat, sugar is rapidly absorbed by the body, and the metabolic effects are immediate. As a result, we want more. The simple solution? Avoid foods with added sugar. Not only will you cut extra calories, but you’ll also be less likely to binge.
