But in the long run, it makes us LESS thirsty, and more hungry! That’s according to Vanderbilt University. In fact, within 24 hours of a high-salt meal, our thirst drops drastically, because sodium produces urea, which increases water retention. And study participants on a high-salt diet drank less water, and complained more often of hunger, compared to those on lower-salt diets. The reason? Because the body uses a lot of energy to produce urea, which then makes us crave extra calories to compensate. So, if you’re feeling hungrier than usual, cut back on salt and drink more water.

Drink plenty of water. Loma Linda researchers say water thins the blood, and makes it easier for your heart to pump. It can also help prevent dangerous clots from forming, which cuts your risk of heart attack in half. Find yourself falling short of the minimum five glasses of water a day? Download a free app, like Waterlogged for the iPhone, or Aqualert for Android. You can set the app to remind you to drink. It’ll also track your water consumption, and show whether you’re meeting your daily goals.

Are you having an issue with a bloated belly and you need to get rid of it in a hurry? Quick, find a pool and jump in!

Experts say, simply bobbing in the pool for half an hour can help reduce bloat. That’s according to integrative physician Dr. Elson Haas. He says being in a body of water, like the pool, acts as a diuretic, increasing urine output for 2 hours afterward. That’s due to the water pressure exerted on your body, which pushes trapped fluids into circulation and out of your body.

If you’re feeling sluggish and dehydrated, try these top “recovery” foods to help get your energy back. They come from registered dietician Deborah Tagliareni:

First: Eat watermelon. It’s got “water” right in the name. Plus, it’s full of lycopene, an antioxidant also found in tomatoes. But watermelon has 4 times as much lycopene as tomatoes. So it’s a powerhouse when it comes to preventing and repairing free-radical damage.

Also, eat some cucumbers. Next, to lettuce, they have the highest water content of ANY vegetables! Plus, cucumbers have key B vitamins that support your metabolism by converting carbohydrates into energy.

The day you’re starting your diet, buy a new fancy water bottle that you love – fill it up – and keep sipping all day long. You’ll find it a lot easier to ignore your food cravings. A study of over 18,000 people found that those who drank 3 extra cups of water daily – on top of what they normally would have – ate 200 fewer calories, took in a lot less sodium, nearly 4 teaspoons less sugar, and over 20 grams less cholesterol. That’s because water diminishes your appetite. It also makes healthy foods taste better. And when you’re doing something healthy – like water – it subconsciously makes you want to do other healthy things. Like, eat more fruits and vegetables. And if you have a new, fancy water bottle you love – you’re more likely to use it.

You can lose over 5 pounds in 12 weeks without changing what you eat, or how much you exercise. How? Drink a glass of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner. According to a study in the journal Obesity, it works simply by filling you up, so you eat less. And drinking TWO glasses of water before each meal helped people lose TWICE as much weight. It’s as simple as that.

Can you really sweat out toxins?

No, according to human physiology professor Dr. Juan del Coso. He says a tiny amount of toxin is released in sweat, but not enough for measurable health benefits. If we really need to purge toxins, our kidneys release it into our urine. And as far as sweating out toxins in a sauna – that may actually backfire. Because when we sweat profusely, our body thinks it should conserve water, so we pee LESS! So we end up hanging on to any toxins longer! If you really feel you have to detox, your best bet is to load up on produce and water. That’ll help move things through your system faster.

University of Washington researchers found a window view is far more soothing, and lowers a person’s heart rate farther, than watching TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds, instead of flowers, trees or water, it’s not going to lower your stress.

You can lose a little over 5 pounds in 12 weeks without changing what you eat, or how much you exercise, simply by drinking water before each meal. Here’s why it works… A study scanned people’s brains after they drank water and found their stomachs registered as “full” – even though all they’d had was water. And that’s why people who drink the most water lose the most weight.
