Take it outside! Research shows people who exercise outdoors are far more likely to still be at it after 3 months, compared to those who exercise exclusively indoors. The reason? Because you’re not as likely to get bored with the great outdoors, compared to the same ole treadmill. Plus, getting out in nature, and seeing trees, grass, and even dirt is a proven happiness-booster, which makes you much more likely to stick with your fitness program.

You can blame your allergies on your ceiling fan! The flat blades pick up tons of dust and dirt, especially when they’re not spinning. So, regularly remove the grime with a moist cloth to keep your ceiling fan from scattering dust and dirt all over your bed at night.

Next time you go to a grocery store or farmer’s market, buy flowers. Because just seeing cut flowers at home or work produces feel-good brain chemicals, and makes us less anxious and prone to depression. Plus, MRIs show looking at flowers increases blood flow to the brain area linked to feelings of empathy and altruism, and makes us friendlier. So we end up thinking fewer negative thoughts and thinking more about others, instead of ourselves. It’s the power of flowers!

Just because someone runs marathons doesn’t mean they aren’t sitting all day. On workdays, people who run marathons and half-marathons sit for an average of nearly 11 hours! That, of course, raises their risk of heart disease. So get up and move throughout the day – even if you’re sore from your last marathon or morning run.

Psychologist Dr. Megan Mueller did a side-by-side comparison of the daily activities of pet parents, and people without pets. The result: Animal lovers spent more time volunteering. They were also more likely to do favors for friends and family, and encourage others to lend a helping hand. In other words, caring for pets make us care more about humans. Dr. Mueller suspects the compassion and patience needed for taking care of our pets transfer directly into our relationships with people.

The next time your commute to work is irritating – and then you get stuck in an annoying meeting – do this to dial down your frustration: Doodle. But not just any doodle.  Spend a few minutes doodling a pattern that contains nothing but curves – like ocean waves. Handwriting analysts say any movements that flow across the page like waves are calming. And psychologists say doodling is a perfect way to release tense energy.
