It’s not your imagination… Your dog really does want to comfort you when you’re down. In fact, scientists say that the instinct to comfort and nuzzle when you’re sick or sad may be hardwired into their doggie DNA.

The tendency to nurture may actually have come from your dog’s wolf ancestors – who were highly social and cooperative. And the instinct may have evolved even further over time as dogs became more domesticated… In order to help them live in harmony with their human companions. Just one more reason your dog really is your best friend.

We prefer that you don’t drink soda…

But if you do, beware of the soda CAN… That’s because a new study found that most cans of soda carry a variety of bacteria on the tops that get ingested when we drink. The worst offenders are cans bought from grocery stores and gas stations – which tend to be touched by a lot of other people… While cans bought from vending machines, or in 12-pack boxes, had the fewest germs. The fix? Always wipe off the top of your soda can, or rinse it with water, before drinking from it.

Have you heard the term “love drunk?”

That feeling when you’re falling for someone and you can hardly think straight because love has hijacked your brain? It’s real. The University of Birmingham says love affects our brain the same way a glass of champagne does. It produces a burst of oxytocin – and gives the brain the same blissed-out feeling we get from a single serving of alcohol.

Halloween’s just around the corner. So, it’s time to talk about the dangers of decorative contact lenses. You might think it would be cool to wear golden contacts to enhance your vampire costume, or wear red lenses with your devil getup… But it’s dangerous.

Wearing lenses that are the wrong size or shape, or aren’t sterile, can lead to an allergic reaction, swelling, conjunctivitis, cornea damage, or even blindness. That’s according to Dr. Andrea Thau, a spokesperson for the American Optometric Association.

She says the only safe way to wear contacts – colored or otherwise – is to get a checkup and prescription from an eye doctor. In fact, it’s illegal to get lenses any other way. Why? Because the FDA regulates decorative contacts as medical devices – and they need a doctor’s prescription to be sold.

So, be sure to steer clear of websites, beauty salons, and flea market vendors that sell them.

You may be stressed because your best friend is stressed. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, emotions are contagious. And if your best friend is going through a hard time and stressing out about it, you’ll absorb those feelings. It happens because our brain is hardwired to empathize with others, and to imitate the emotions around us.

If you get nightmares – it may NOT be the spicy food you ate at 11pm – or the horror movie you just watched. You may have just gone to bed TOO LATE! That’s because people who stay up late throw off their sleep cycles. Here’s how it works: As morning approaches, our stress hormones naturally rise in an effort to wake us up… But, if your sleep cycle is off, your dreaming phase will coincide with your stress hormones rising – and cause a nightmare. So, go to bed earlier and you won’t have that problem… Because your dreaming phase and stress hormones won’t intersect.

Do you drink fresh green juice daily?

That green juice you sip every afternoon could have an unexpected side effect: Stained teeth! Fresh-pressed juice blends made with dark leafy greens and beets contain plant pigments called chromogens… But they can build up on teeth – and as little as one juice a day could cause stains. The effect is a lot greater when you sip the juice, instead of just eating those foods. So sip through a straw so it doesn’t come in contact with your teeth.

Would you believe it’s NOT calling 9-1-1? That’s the word from healthcare expert Leslie Michelson. He wrote “The Patient’s Playbook” – and he says most people make the mistake because they aren’t sure if what they’re experiencing is a true emergency, or serious enough to call for paramedics. But Michelson says it’s best to err on the side of caution. And if the patient has a history of medical issues – like heart disease or diabetes, has a head injury, or is elderly – definitely call 9-1-1.

Have someone scare you! That’s according to Dr. Rachel Vreeman, author of “Don’t Cross Your Eyes…They’ll Get Stuck That Way!” Dr. Vreeman says hiccups happen when your diaphragm muscles and controlling nerves get stuck in a “reflex arc.” That’s when the nerves keep signaling the diaphragm to contract suddenly — causing your hiccup — and then triggering it to repeat itself. This reflex usually ends on its own, but something that interrupts the loop — like being startled enough to gasp — can sometimes make the hiccups stop sooner.

But here’s what nobody tells you… You’re going to have to eat less and exercise more than somebody else your size to keep the weight off, permanently. That’s because our bodies hate losing weight. When we do, our calorie burning becomes less efficient. So, when you go from 180 to 150 pounds, for example, you burn fewer calories throughout the day than your friend who also weighs 150 pounds – but didn’t lose any weight. That’s why a lot of people regain the weight they lost. So don’t think your journey is over once you hit your goal weight. To keep it off, you’ll still need to watch your calories and increase your exercise.
