If you swap your mayo for mustard you’ll save about 90 calories per tablespoon. And, here’s another reason to make that change… You’ll burn more calories, too. Scientists at England’s Oxford Polytechnic Institute found that one teaspoon of mustard can boost metabolism by up to 25% for several hours afterward. It’s thanks to the spices and phytochemicals in mustard. And the hotter the mustard, the bigger the metabolism boost.

If you have a favorite pizza place – or a favorite brand of frozen burritos – stick with it. Don’t experiment to see if you can find something you like better. Because when people switch things up, they end up eating more. That’s according to food scientists who found that if the new food we’re trying isn’t as satisfying as our usual go-to choice, we tend to eat more overall than if we just stuck with what we already knew we liked. In the experiment, the scientists found that the study participants who ordered pizza from a different restaurant, ended up eating more junk food afterward than people who stuck with a pizza place they already knew they liked.

If you’re dripping with sweat during Cross Fit, while the guy next to you seems dry… Don’t sweat it! You may actually be more fit than they are! Sports scientist Dr. Lindsay Baker says sweat is how the body cools itself when our core temperature rises. And because a fit person is better at regulating their core temperature, they start sweating sooner – and more profusely – than someone who’s not as fit. You may also be bigger than the runner NOT sweating next to you. Bigger people sweat more than smaller people, because their bodies produce more heat. That’s why men tend to sweat more than women.

If you don’t think your e-reader is keeping you awake – I have some stats to share with you. According to the journal Sleep Medicine, when people read a book on paper, versus an e‑reader, they fell asleep 28% faster and were 65% less likely to wake up during the night. It’s all down to the blue light emitted from back-lit e-readers. Yes, we’re a broken record on this, but it DOES make a difference. So if you love to read yourself to sleep, pick up a real book.

Are you vegetarian or vegan?

If so, you may want to skip the red wine with dinner, because red wine contains compounds called tannins. And when tannins interact with plant-based sources of iron, it prevents your body from absorbing the iron. That means you won’t get the iron benefits from vegetarian staples like lentils, soybeans, tofu, quinoa, spinach and brown rice. And it’s hard enough already for vegans and vegetarians to get the iron they need, because the body has a harder time absorbing iron from plant sources than meat. So skip the red wine with dinner to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need.

Want your child to eat healthy vegetables, like broccoli and carrots – instead of not-so-healthy ones, like French fries? Make their plate as colorful as possible. Research at Cornell University found that children find colorful foods highly appealing. And when they’re faced with a plate containing 7 different items, in 6 different colors – they’re more likely to at least try a little of everything.

Next time you’re headed into mosquito territory without bug repellent, slather your feet with antiperspirant, even if you’re wearing socks. That’s because mosquitoes are highly-attuned to the smell of human feet, and can detect odors we can’t… and they use those smells to home in on us. But according to UC Riverside researchers, if we stop our feet from sweating, mosquitoes will be much less likely to zero in on us for a bite.

Are you thinking about getting the shingles shot?

Don’t get it too soon! The shingles rash is triggered by remnants of the virus that gave you chickenpox – and it’s incredibly painful. But Dr. Maria Nagel, a neurologist at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, says you’re less likely to have an outbreak when you’re younger, and your immune system is stronger. And if you get the shingles shot before age 60, you might not be protected down the road, when you’re much more likely to develop the rash – and your risk of complications are much higher. Bottom line: Don’t ask your doctor for the shingles shot until after you turn 60.

Why do we eat so much when we’re stressed?
Because we can’t taste things as well! Now, 90% of us admit to stress eating – but stress suppresses our ability to taste. So we eat more – trying to taste our food! So when you’re stressed, reach for something spicy or strong tasting, like a pickle. Or, relax first without food. Take a walk, calm down, and when you eat, your taste buds will be functioning more normally and you’ll eat less.

If you want to reveal 6-pack abs by the pool or at the beach – skip the crunches, and even the planks! We now know it’s all about the cardio. Exercise scientists from Auburn University did a study and found that when people did ab-exercises for 6 weeks, they didn’t lose ANY abdominal fat. That’s because we can’t spot-reduce fat. We lose it all over. However, consistent amounts of aerobic exercise – like running or swimming – combined with strength training and a reduced calorie diet DOES result in weight loss, everywhere on your body, including your stomach.
