Are you stressed? Balance your checkbook! People who balance their checkbooks once a month experience significantly less stress and suffer from fewer stress-related illnesses. Research proves it’s the amount of control people have over their money, not the amount they earn, that contributes to their wellbeing. So, knowing your current bank balance and getting your finances in order can reduce your stress.

Here’s a good reason to lower the volume on your MP3 player: Protecting your hearing can protect your brain from Alzheimer’s! The reason? Because when we can’t hear well, our brain has to work harder to figure out what sounds we’re hearing – and what’s being said. And that takes mental energy away from other tasks. Plus, trouble hearing makes people less social – and numerous studies show chatting with friends is one of the best ways to keep your mind sharp. Bottom line: If you can keep your hearing intact by lowering the volume on your MP3 player, you’ll cut your risk of Alzheimer’s by 20%.

Bacon lovers, your taste for salty, cured meats may be wrecking your skin. Research has found that the nitrates, sulfites and sodium in bacon trigger inflammation, and that inflammation could damage your skin, leading to everything from rosacea to acne to wrinkles.

And since the average person eats 18 pounds of bacon a year, it could very well be the reason your skin is acting up.

60% of people look at their phone within 15 minutes of waking up. That’s according to a Deloitte Global Mobile Consumer survey. And the other 40% check their phone within 5 minutes of waking – or less, like the 18% who say they look at their phone immediately. But The Stress Institute in Atlanta says, when we do that, we switch from the peaceful state of sleeping, to stressed-out, in an instant. Things like work emails, texts, depressing news stories, and social media updates startle the brain, sending it into panic mode, and triggering the release of stress hormones. Dr. Kathleen Hall founded The Stress Institute and she says, just seeing what’s on your phone puts your body on alert, and triggers a flood of adrenaline and cortisol. That roots your day in stress chemicals.

So what’s the smart move? Dr. Hall recommends starting your day with a phone-free walk. Even if it’s just in your neighborhood, while you’re walking the dog. We already know that spending time in nature helps us become more calm and grounded. And a relaxed walk enhances those benefits, by boosting circulation and metabolism, loosening tight muscles, and releasing tension. And that sets the tone for a calmer day.

You may want to give a gift to your local nail salon: A dracaena (druh-SEE-nuh) plant! According to the American Chemical Society, that plant can clean the air as well as some ventilation systems. Removing harmful chemicals and pollutants.

Researchers were testing plants for their purification qualities – particularly how well they removed V-O-Cs from the air: Volatile Organic Compounds, which can be found in paint, furniture, dry cleaning chemicals and acetone — the ingredient in nail polish remover.

And the researchers found that the dracaena plant absorbed an amazing 94% of acetone. Researchers say their findings could pave the way for plants to replace more expensive ventilation systems in places like nail salons.

Want to take a power nap – but don’t want to risk sleeping too long, and feeling groggy for the rest of the day? Take what experts call a “drop nap.” Sit in a chair and hold an object that, when you doze off and drop it on the floor, will make a loud enough noise to wake you. So something like a heavy book – or an empty plastic tumbler. That way, you’ll know you slept because you dropped it – and you won’t sleep too long.

If a big meal leaves you feeling gassy and bloated, firmly massage the arches of both feet for 2 minutes. Studies show a foot rub after a rich meal reduces gas and belly pain in 74% of people. Dr. David Edelberg is an integrative medicine professor at the University of Chicago……and he says it works by stimulating the body’s enteric nervous system. Those are the nerves that help produce intestinal enzymes, get food moving faster through your digestive tract, and calm belly spasms. So you’ll digest your meal with a lot less gas and bloating after a 2-minute foot massage.

According to Clinical psychologist Dr. Richard Sherry says they both involve feeling distanced from the person you’re lashing out at – and having an immediate outlet for your hostility. Put those two together and it encourages people to become more aggressive!

So just like normally calm people can lash out when they’re behind the wheel, ordinary people can become uncharacteristically mean on social media. Dr. Sherry says heavy users of social media are the least likely to feel empathy or compassion towards others – and have less patience. We’re also significantly quicker to judge others online – and we’re more reactive on social media when it comes to anger than we are in real life. However, most people also REGRET losing their temper online after an angry outburst. So Dr. Richard Sherry says, always pause before you post!

Sometimes it IS okay for the elderly to have high blood pressure! According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, if you have a loved one, age 85 or older, with high blood pressure, don’t worry about it. High blood pressure in people who are very elderly is an indication of better health, while lower numbers could mean trouble. Dr. James Goodwin is a professor of geriatric medicine – and he says high blood pressure in the very old is simply a sign that their heart is pumping strongly and predicts an even longer life! Low blood pressure could mean the heart isn’t pumping efficiently. So, before an elderly loved one goes on blood pressure meds, have a talk with their doctor to see if it’s necessary.

To be more focused and productive, remember this simple equation. It comes from productivity coach, Carson Tate: 50 plus 10.

In other words, for every 50 minutes you spend doing a mentally-challenging task – take a 10-minute break to do something mindless, like checking Facebook or playing a game on your phone. Taking a break about every hour will help re-set your brain so you don’t overload your neural circuits, and will help you focus for the NEXT 50 minutes of mentally-challenging activities.
