Sit up straight, shoulders back, chin up. According to the journal Health Psychology, that’s all it takes to boost your mood, reduce your fear, and increase your self-esteem! Because when we sit upright, our body’s autonomic nervous system – which controls automatic functions like blinking and breathing – kicks into gear. It releases energy and increases blood flow – and that’s what makes you feel more alert and confident. So check your posture the next time you’re stressed, grouchy, or bummed out. Sitting up straight can improve your mood and energy levels.

Breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day. In fact, new research from Harvard University found skipping breakfast raises your risk of heart disease and heart attack by as much as 27%. That’s because skipping breakfast makes you hungrier, making you more likely to grab snacks and overeat at lunch. And doing that can lead to weight gain, hypertension, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes, all of which are risk factors for heart disease.

Because that can prompt you to be more physically active, and make exercise a regular part of your life. Researchers at the UK’s Bangor University found having a visual cue where you’ll see it all the time – say, something you always use for exercise, like your water bottle, ear-buds, or running shoes – makes people more likely to follow through and work out. The physical reminder boosts activity in the brain region linked to organization and planning – and literally doubles your odds of becoming a regular exerciser.

Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, better sleep triggers mental and physical advantages similar to what lottery winners feel after winning a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot! The 4-year study found those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier. Those who relied on sleeping pills had worse physical and mental health. So if you want to feel like a million bucks – or at least a quarter-of-a-million – get some quality sleep.

Like, if your teenager doesn’t answer their phone, they must have been abducted? Or if your husband is late coming home from work, he was probably in an accident?

Well, according to clinical psychologist Dr. Martin Seif, pretty much everybody has dark thoughts from time to time. And we humans are bad at assessing risk. So our fears are usually way out of proportion to the chances of actual danger. And worrying is part of human nature. When we have something valuable – like loved ones – it’s natural to worry about something bad happening. It only becomes a problem if those worries start controlling your life, or you try to control the lives of others because of your irrational fears. Also, Dr. Seif explains that scary thoughts you can’t shake can be a symptom of anxiety or depression. If that describes you, consider talking to a therapist.

You might reconsider when you hear this: Microbiologist Dr. Anthony Hilton says the average family car is rarely cleaned. And grease and crumbs from food create the perfect growing environment for germs that can trigger everything from skin infections, to food poisoning, to vomiting. If you allow food in your car, Dr. Hilton recommends treating your vehicle as an extension of your home. And clean and disinfect everything that gets touched regularly, at least once a week. Especially the steering wheel, gearshift, door handles, and baby seat buckles.

If you’re looking to burn fat, you can’t beat a cup of coffee.

It contains an antioxidant called chlorogenic acid – or CGA. It’s a polyphenol that encourages the body to burn fat and increases our levels of leptin. That’s the “I’m full” hormone, which suppresses appetite, so we eat less. In a study, women who got 1,000 milligrams of CGA daily lost three times more weight.

You’ll get 1,300 milligrams of chlorogenic acid from a large Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.

Even better? Get a cold-brewed coffee from Starbucks. Cold brewing means the coffee grounds never get heated – and brewing at high heat degrades the antioxidants, specifically chlorogenic acid.

Here’s a key to remember when you want the most fat-burning from your coffee. Beans with the highest CGA content are typically grown at high altitudes and close to the equator. So if the beans are from countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and parts of Brazil, you’re good to go.

I’m all about brain health – and keeping our minds sharp as we age. And although doing puzzles, coloring, and playing an instrument are proven ways to keep neural connections firing, there are other things we can do in our daily lives that help.

Like, learning the words to your new favorite song. That exercises the parts of the brain responsible for focus and memory. Plus, the concentration required to pick out the lyrics releases brain chemicals that stimulate neuro-plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections throughout life.

Another way to improve brain health: Play catch. A study in the journal Nature Neuroscience found that catching and throwing require us to coordinate physical things like vision, balance, and timing, along with more abstract concepts, like spatial relations and anticipating future movements. And that means, practicing hand-eye coordination helps our body beef up the mental circuits that transmit data from one place to another.

Skip these foods that cause gas…

First, be careful with sugar-free gum. It contains sorbitol – which takes a long time to digest. And undigested sorbitol in your small intestine acts as hothouse, fermenting bacteria, which can cause flatulence.

Also, skip protein bars that contain soy. Processed soy-isolate contains sugar molecules that the body can’t break down entirely. So they hang out in the gut, fermenting, and causing gas and bloating.

One more gas-inducing food: Almond milk! It can contain a thickening agent called carrageenan. It’s made from seaweed, and it’s been linked to ulcers, inflammation, and other gastrointestinal problems.

You could be allergic to something under your own roof. For example:

Your fish tank. Having a fish as a pet is a good hypoallergenic option – but the tank can be harboring mold. So clean the tank and filter once a month.

Another allergy trigger? Your computer printer. They often emit volatile organic compounds and other particles that can trigger asthma and damage the lungs. So make sure your printer is at least 10 feet away from where you sit, and in a well-ventilated area.
