In a study involving former prisoners of war, brain scans revealed that those locked in solitary confinement had neurological damage comparable to suffering a concussion! While those who had social interactions had less brain damage. It’s because loneliness boosts inflammation in the brain and interferes with our ability to remember facts and solve problems. So give your friends a call, or maybe Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime with them, or even do a social distancing get-together (weather permitting).

Get more social! A recent review of over 70 studies in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that people who are alone and isolated are 29% more likely to die early… Compared to those with a larger social circle. Which is comparable to the mortality rate from severe obesity. So, meet new people by taking classes, or signing up for a team sport.

…may be a busy schedule of work, exercise, friends, hobbies, and volunteering.

University of Texas researchers studied over 300 people over age 50. And those with the busiest schedules and social lives had better memories, sharper reasoning, faster problem-solving, and a greater vocabulary at every age. Because keeping busy regularly exposes us to new situations and people, and helps us learn new things. All of which have been shown to improve brain function, and help stave off age-related memory decline.

When it comes to keeping your mind sharp, our ancient ancestors were on to something. Florida State psychology professor, Dr. Thomas Joiner says they thrived thanks to a healthy trifecta: They interacted a lot with nature, and with others, and maintained a high level of physical activity. Put all of that together, and it can be calming and invigorating at the same time. And you don’t have to do all 3 separately. For example, invite a friend hiking, fishing, or for a round of golf. You’ll knock out all 3 at once, and be thinking more clearly as a result.

People who spend quality time with friends sleep better at night. But those who feel lonely have trouble dozing off, and feel less energetic and less focused the next day. Research at the University of Rochester found that strong friendships reduce stress and anxiety, and make us feel more secure and relaxed. And that reduces activity in the brain area that stays vigilant at night. Basically, if we’re lonely, we feel vulnerable, insecure, and unprotected, even while we sleep, and part of our brain stays on alert for self-protection. So hanging with your friends during the day is your brand new sleeping pill.

You know having close friends is one of the keys to longevity and wellbeing. But even being on good terms with your neighbors has benefits. Research from Rutgers University found that having regular, positive contact with neighbors was linked to a greater sense of personal growth, self-worth, and purpose. And all you have to do to get the benefits is wave hello – or let your neighbor borrow your hedge clippers. It’s all down to the fact that our daily lives can be enriched by seemingly minor encounters, which make us feel like we’re part of a community, and that we add value to a larger social network.

It could be due to the lousy, depressing news you watched last night! Researchers found negative media stories increase stress levels – especially among women – and make us more anxious during future nerve-wracking events… like an upcoming face-to-face with the boss. So experts say to skip the negative news at night – and watch a “Friends” rerun instead.

Get out in the world and TALK to people! Researchers at the University of Arizona found the happiest people spent 25% less time alone, and a whopping 70% more time engaged in face-to-face conversations. That’s because heartfelt conversations help us connect with our emotions, which creates closer bonds with others and triggers a boost in our health and happiness.
