Which is better: Working out to the same songs on repeat – or switching it up and exercising to random music? Go ahead and hit repeat. Working out to music is good no matter what – it helps us exercise longer and harder without feeling the additional effort. But when we listen to songs we know we like, we get an extra mood boost. That’s according to the book “Inside Sport Psychology.” But when we listen to unfamiliar songs, our brain gets distracted trying to figure out the music and lyrics – and, as a result, our exercise efficiency is reduced. So put your workout playlist on repeat – and discover new music another time.

It makes the perfect bedtime snack. The carbs in cereal increase levels of the brain chemical serotonin, which makes us feel happy and relaxed. And the milk’s tryptophan content converts to serotonin, too. Plus, there’s calcium and magnesium in milk, both of which are calming.

To protect yourself from the flu, sprinkle cinnamon on everything from coffee grounds to oatmeal to hamburger meat. Researchers at Touro College in New York found cinnamon extract killed cold and flu viruses in 10 minutes! It’s down to the active compound in cinnamon, which is anti-viral. So adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of cinnamon to your food and drinks every day could help YOU avoid colds and flu.

Make proximity work in your favor. That advice comes from psychology professor Dr. Timothy Pychyl. Basically, when we can easily access something, we’re more likely to take action. So if your sneakers are by your bed, you’re more likely to put them on and go for a morning walk. Or if cut vegetables are the first thing you see when you open the fridge, you’re more likely to eat them. So, use the “proximity effect” to your advantage. It can boost your motivation.

Shoes-radiator-wp12.25

Here’s a tip to stay warm this winter.
Before you get dressed in the morning – warm your socks in the dryer – or put your shoes by the radiator. Feet are harder to keep warm because when we’re cold, our body reduces blood flow to our extremities to keep our vital organs warm. But our feet act like a thermos – if they start off cold, they’ll stay cold. If they start off warm, they’ll have a better chance of staying warm. So warm up your socks or shoes before leaving the house.

Make sure to protect your pets in winter from antifreeze and de-icers!

antifreeze-wp12.22

Antifreeze has an ingredient – called ethylene glycol – that’s highly toxic for pets, but it also smells sweet, which makes it attractive to animals. So make sure you store antifreeze in a tightly sealed container in an area your pets can’t get to – like a locked storage shed. And watch your pets when they’re near driveways or puddles that may contain spilled antifreeze. If you think your pet may have come in contact with antifreeze, call animal poison control immediately.

As far as de-icers, they’re made in different ways. Some can cause sore paws or even intestinal illness. So, if you use it, look for a brand that says it’s safe for pets…and put booties on dogs when walking in areas that may have been treated. Because if a pet licks their paws after walking on rock salt or de‑icing solutions, they could be poisoned.

Roses, lavender, sweet basil, tomatoes and coriander? They contain an aromatic compound called linalool, which lowers stress hormones. It’s found in over 200 species of plants and produce. And aromas are calming because they bypass the rational, thinking part of our brain, and go straight to the emotional center.

Drink green tea every day.
In a recent 12-week study, people who drank 4 cups of green tea daily, and did a 25-minute workout, lost an average of two more pounds and more belly fat than those who exercised but DIDN’T drink green tea. The difference? It’s the catechins in green tea, which are a type of antioxidant that triggers the release of fat from fat cells, and helps speed up the liver’s ability to turn fat into energy.

If you’re prone to headaches and joint pain, eat more tangerines. They contain a phytonutrient – called nobiletin – that helps the liver function at its best – so it’s better able to flush out toxins. The result? One tangerine daily can produce a 33% DROP in headaches and joint pain. That’s according to the California Preventive Medical Center.

Getting 6 hours of sleep a night or less. So the next time you hear someone bragging about how they don’t need more than 5 hours a night, steer clear of them. Because they could already be spewing out infectious droplets. And 30% of the population gets 6 hours a night or less. But the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that less than 1% of the population is biologically capable of comfortably running on that amount of sleep, and functioning normally.
