Kumquat isn’t just a fun word to say – these tiny orange fruits are great if you have a cold or flu. They contain bioflavonoids that enable your immune cells to fight back and react more quickly to viral invaders. According to research from UCLA, eating 3 kumquats a day can help you bounce back from a viral illness – like a cold or flu – 40% faster.

That’s a good thing… for your posture. It forces you to engage your abs, so you’ll be strengthening them as you sit. And according to exercise physiologist Neal Pire, it works whether you’re watching TV on the couch, or sitting at work. So, sit on the edge of your seat!

Thyme!

It’s an inexpensive, natural cough remedy. Thyme has plant compounds that reduce the inflammation of a sore throat and relax throat muscles, so you don’t cough as much.

So try this: Add 1 teaspoon dried thyme or 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme to a cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain, add honey for even more cough-suppressing power – and sip!

It’s the spice used in Indian curries – and its active compound is curcumin. It has tons of health benefits – and over 7,000 studies have been done, showing it can help prevent everything from cancer to Alzheimer’s. That’s because it contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
So, which is better? Popping a turmeric or curcumin supplement, or simply sprinkling the spice on your food? Here’s the answer, according to Dr. Ajay Goel, who’s researched curcumin and cancer at Baylor University Medical Center. He says a teaspoon of the spice only has about 100 milligrams of curcumin. And we need at least twice – to 10 times that amount – to get the health benefits. So unless you’re regularly sprinkling your food with turmeric, you’re probably not getting enough. So he recommends supplements that contain at least 250 milligrams of curcumin. But as always, talk to your doctor first.

You may have heard that putting hand sanitizer on a pimple will get rid of the bacteria and dry it up? NOT TRUE!
Dermatologists at Stony Brook University say putting hand sanitizer on acne will only make things worse. First, your skin will produce even more oil to compensate for the drying effect. And the active ingredients in the gel can irritate the skin on your face. As a result, you can get more pimples and redness as a rebound effect. So, don’t do it. Instead, use a product that’s made to fight pimples on your face that contains benzoyl peroxide.

More than your friends? You may be bummed out. A study from Northwestern University found that the more time people spent using their phone – the greater their odds of depression. The link may be that people use their phones as a lifeline, to try reach out to others. Or that someone who’s depressed uses their phone as a way to escape and NOT interact with people, face to face. Whichever the case may be, if you use your phone more than most, you may want to seek counseling. Try Locator.APA.org. APA stands for the American Psychological Association, and you can find a therapist near you.

Zinc. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that people who took zinc supplements had 40% fewer colds than those taking a placebo. Plus, the volunteers taking zinc who did end up with a cold, had a‑third fewer symptoms, and recovered as much as 3 days faster.

The reason? Because zinc prevents the cold virus from attaching to certain receptors inside our nose – which keeps them from invading our body and infecting our cells. So, get some zinc lozenges or supplements, and you’ll be much less likely to get sick.

You may not need a pill or tablet to relieve your indigestion. A teaspoon of straight olive oil could do the trick. Research from Bastyr University in Washington has found it can soothe an upset stomach in 15 minutes. That’s because olive oil contains anti-inflammatory compounds that aid digestion enzymes and bile. In fact, consuming 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day – like in salad dressing or on roasted vegetables – can help alleviate chronic gastrointestinal pain in 3 weeks.

Salmon. Eating two 4-ounce servings of wild salmon a week makes you 42% less likely to suffer hearing loss. That’s according to a large-scale study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. If you can’t get wild salmon, tuna and mackerel will do the trick too. Why does it work? Because the omega-3 fatty acid in these fish improves blood flow to the inner ear. Those fatty acids guard your eyes too, by protecting the cells that deteriorate with aging.

Here’s how: If you have tooth pain, rub an ice cube on the webbed spot between your thumb and index finger. The nerves there will send a cold signal to the brain that can override pain signals. Researchers from McGill University say doing that can cut toothache pain in half. Then, call your dentist, stat!
