Make your bed in the morning! A survey by the National Sleep Foundation found that deeper sleepers tend to make their bed every day. They also change their sheets at least once a week, and keep their bedroom tidier than those who are poor sleepers. The link? A clean, comfortable bedroom allows your brain to relax. A cluttered bedroom raises stress levels and delays sleep.

That’s because we all have a certain amount of brown fat cells – and they can sense the cold. The cold triggers them to start warming us up – that’s why we have them – those brown fat cells release their energy as heat. And when they’re activated, we torch calories and melt our other fat, the white fat. So bundle up and take your workout outdoors. Just remember to protect your limbs, fingers and toes – which have a harder time staying warm.

That’s because changes in temperature and barometric pressure are big triggers. They have an effect on nerves and blood vessels. Plus, the dry air this time of year can make you more prone to sinus issues that can also trigger headaches. The best thing you can do is to stay hydrated – and to keep a humidifier in your bedroom. That’ll help your sinuses. And if you know a storm is coming, pop some ibuprofen ahead of time.

Save a few calories, and a few grams of fat, and go for pumpkin. Both pies have some redeeming qualities – vitamins, fiber and antioxidants in both the apples and the pumpkin. But the real reason pumpkin wins is because apple pie has that top layer of crust. Eating a slice of pumpkin pie is like eating an open-faced sandwich – you consume fewer carbs.

Are you a “glass is half-full” type of person? A study from the University of Kentucky in Lexington found that optimism helps your body fight off cold and flu viruses. The immune systems of volunteers responded more aggressively to germs injected into their skin on days when they felt more hopeful, and less so when their moods were more pessimistic.

If you’re not counting calories during the holidays, doctors say you should at least watch your salt intake. Because hospitals see a lot of heart patients between Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. Most of the time it’s because of too much salt in holiday meals. Salt can be very dangerous because it promotes water retention, which can be fatal for anyone with a weak heart. To avoid a trip to the Emergency Room, instead of flavoring your holiday dishes with salt, use herbs, spices and other natural flavorings.
