Stop raking leaves! That’s because mold grows on fallen leaves, and stirring them up can release spores into the air you’re breathing – which can trigger an asthma attack. If you absolutely have to rake: Wear a surgical mask while you’re doing yard work.

…because we run FASTER in the Fall! That’s from running coach Michael Melinoitis. Because when the weather’s cooler, with less humidity, running takes less effort and there’s less resistance in dry air. So even at the same heart rate, you’ll go faster. The best weather for a run? 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit… or 10 degrees Celsius. That’s why there are more marathons in the Fall.

When you think of someone falling and being injured at home – a senior citizen probably comes to mind. Well, younger adults are just as likely to be trip-and-fall victims – thanks to our cellphones! We’re all so busy looking down at our phones that we’re falling down the stairs, tripping over the cat, and slipping on throw rugs. In fact, over half of all walking-and-talking cellphone accidents happen at home! That’s according to the University of Maryland. And 1‑in‑5 at-home cellphone-related falls causes a concussion! So if you’re not going to watch your step – at least clear a path in the most used areas – like between the couch and the kitchen. So you don’t wind up breaking your neck.

But don’t let your lip balm make things worse!
Dermatologist Dr. Leslie Baumann says balms that contain camphor and menthol – that make lips feel tingly – will suck moisture from your already dry lips and it’ll evaporate away.

So, they actually make our lips drier! Those ingredients only work on lips if they’re counterbalanced by moisturizing ingredients called “occlusives.” Those include beeswax, shea butter, and things like coconut or argan oils – which block moisture loss.

So, check the ingredients on your lip balm and make sure – if it includes camphor or menthol, it also has something like beeswax or shea butter.

If you feel achy when the days get shorter, and the temperatures start to drop, you’ve got a lot of company. The reason? Because our body’s production of mood-boosting and painkilling endorphins drops as we head from Fall into Winter – when our pituitary kind of goes into hibernation.

But studies show acupressure can boost endorphin production. The trick: Firmly massage the outside edge of your ears from the tops, to the lobes, for one minute… And it’ll soothe your aches and pains for at least an hour.

If Fall weather is leaving you feeling kind of chilly, wear something red! According to color therapists, just looking at the color red can physically warm us up. That’s because red is the longest wavelength of visible light – just shy of infrared radiation, or heat… And it helps boost our heart rate and circulation.

Be careful trimming your Christmas tree! According to the CDC, nearly 6,000 people in the US are treated every year in emergency rooms for falls that occur while putting decorations on Christmas trees. So make sure your ladder is secure and stable before putting the star on top of the tree.

The reason to use a humidifier.

humidifier

One of the reasons we get more viruses in fall and winter is because the air is drier. A lack of humidity allows viruses to thrive and makes it harder for our nasal passages to trap and eliminate them. So keep a humidifier going at home. But make sure to keep it clean. Put about 5 drops of oregano, eucalyptus or peppermint oil in the water reservoir. The oil will reduce germs and make the air smell nice. However, you’ll still need to clean the reservoir weekly.
