Research shows that getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night cuts our risk of illness by 33%. But our crazy-busy lives, and our love of late-in-the-day caffeine, mean we don’t always get the sleep we need.

So, try this: Spend at least 2 minutes a day cuddling your loved ones, or your pets. Cuddling with another creature signals our immune system to boost production of disease-fighting white blood cells. And researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that we get just as big an immunity boost from cuddling as we get from regularly getting a full night’s sleep.

Don’t get mad…let it go.

If someone upsets you – you have two choices: You can either fly off the handle – or let it go. Here’s why researchers say you should let it go…

•In a recent study, people who frequently fought or became enraged had double the risk of death from all causes.

•Meanwhile, letting things go is linked with better blood flow and a more efficient heartbeat.

That’s not to say that an occasional argument is going to kill you. But turning the other cheek may ultimately make you healthier.

Sucking in your gut isn’t cheating – it’s exercise!
That’s because pulling in your stomach engages your upper and lowers abs simultaneously. It can also strengthen your core and improve your posture. So go ahead and suck in your gut, on and off, for 5 minutes a day.

Ladies – if you’ve had a cold, will using your germ-infested lipstick make you sick all over again? Dr. Mona Gohara from the Yale School of Medicine says that’s extremely unlikely. Because the cold virus isn’t terribly resilient. But other germs and viruses are a lot hardier, and COULD trigger a relapse…… Including those that cause mono, cold sores, and the flu. In that case, toss any lip products and start fresh.

Your love of smoothies could be wrecking your teeth!

Fruit smoothies can cause dental erosion – which can lead to tooth sensitivity and wear away the enamel. In fact, when researchers exposed teeth to an hour’s worth of sipping a smoothie, the enamel weakened by nearly 40%! That’s because smoothies can be highly acidic. So switch to a smoothie with milk or yogurt in it, too. Because the calcium will help minimize the enamel-softening effects of the acid.

Your spice rack could be your ticket to good health.

Cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar. Turmeric can help prevent Alzheimer’s. And oregano has cancer-fighting properties. So, sprinkle cinnamon on your latte…… curry powder on your veggies……and use big handfuls of herbs in pasta sauces.

If the first thing your doctor asks at your appointment is “How was traffic?” – it’s not just small talk. Being stuck in traffic raises your blood pressure and triples your heart attack risk… So if you’ve battled traffic to get to your appointment, have your blood pressure checked before you leave, instead of when you first arrive.

Which refers to the pain some people feel after hours of texting, with their hands curved around their device in the shape of claws. The repetitive motion puts a lot of strain on the tendons and muscles in our fingers, wrists and forearms…and can cause numbness or cramping. The fix? Before every texting session, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Aaron Daluiski recommends flexing your hands backwards and forwards at the wrist, and stretching your fingers apart as wide as possible.

If you’re feeling anxious, brew some vanilla tea. Stanford University researchers say the chemical compounds in vanilla tea boost our brain’s production of relaxing alpha waves… And even if you just inhale the aroma, it relieves stress and irritability in 90% of people – in less than 3 minutes.

Watch out for earaches.

Just because you didn’t go swimming doesn’t mean you can’t come down with a painful case of swimmer’s ear. We can also get it from a super-sweaty workout, which increase moisture in the ears – or from wearing earbuds, which can scratch the skin and give bacteria an entry point. So after a particular sweaty workout, dry your ears thoroughly – and clean off those earbuds with rubbing alcohol!
