If you’re craving something salty and spicy – it may mean your taste buds are dull and you need more zinc in your diet. Zinc not only makes taste buds work more efficiently. It prompts the growth of new taste buds. And you can get more zinc by eating shrimp, beef and crab.

Ideally, your bedroom should be 68 degrees. That’s according to the Florida Sleep Institute. If your bedroom is freezing in winter and roasting in summer –paint the walls with radiant barrier paint. That’s the stuff used in spaceships to insulate them and keep temperatures constant. You can find it at The Home Depot.

When you’re looking at the nutrition label on packaged food, how much sodium is okay? It’s important to know, since up to 75% of the salt in our diets comes from packaged foods. So use this simple ratio to keep your sodium in check. It comes from Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. He says look for a 1-to-1 ratio of calories to sodium, or less. So if a food has 150 calories per serving, it should have no more than 150 milligrams of sodium.

Just breathe. Taking 6 slow, deep breaths – the kind that expand and contract your diaphragm – can reduce your blood pressure by 10 points in just minutes! That’s according to the experts at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In fact, those 6 belly breaths are so powerful that doing that 3 times a day is all it takes to lower the risk of a heart attack by 30%.

If you’re going all out, it’s better to have all-you-can-eat pasta than all-you-can-eat pancakes. Because at least the pasta will have heart-healthy tomato sauce. While all you’re getting with pancakes is refined carbs and loads of sugar.

If you don’t have the time or money for a relaxing massage – it’s okay. All you really need is a 20-minute walk. That’s according to the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Scientists found that a brisk 20-minute walk can relax muscle spasms, soothe pain and speed healing as effectively as a professional massage.

Eat more protein. According to a large study – which looked at a quarter of a million people – increasing the amount of protein you eat by 20 grams daily – the amount in one egg plus a half-cup of almonds – is all you need to reduce your risk. Just get your protein from a source that’s not RED meat – because that can increase your risk. The researchers say protein lowers blood pressure, which is why it helps prevent strokes.

You’ll be seen on time, since your doctor hasn’t had other patients to delay her… Plus, you’ll be less likely to be prescribed unnecessary antibiotics. Dr. Jeffrey Linder from Brigham and Women’s Hospital did the research… and he found that primary care doctors are nearly 30% more likely to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics toward the end of the day. Because they’re wiped out by then – and it’s easier to give a quick fix and send patients on their way. But if you can’t get an early appointment, ask your doctor if the pills are really necessary. Because half of all antibiotics prescribed AREN’T. And when we take antibiotics too often, we risk becoming vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant bacteria – and overuse of antibiotics can lead to diarrhea, rashes, and yeast infections.

You don’t really have to worry about getting food poisoning from sushi. That’s according to attorney Bill Marler, who specializes in food poisoning. Because fish meant for sushi is generally handled very carefully from source to chef. And the US requires all sushi fish to be flash-frozen to kill parasites, except tuna. That’s a deep-water fish that isn’t prone to parasites. And Marler says there have been only a handful of disease outbreaks caused by sushi, ever.

…indoors or out! Studies show that there’s a certain type of bacteria in soil that we breathe in, and seeps through our skin – and it makes us calmer and better thinkers! The bacteria stimulate the growth of brain neurons, and boost production of the brain chemical serotonin, which reduces anxiety.
