University of Washington researchers found a window view is far more soothing, and lowers a person’s heart rate farther, than watching TV. But there’s a catch: It has to be a view of nature. If you’re looking at a cityscape of buildings, traffic, and crowds, instead of flowers, trees or water, it’s not going to lower your stress.

Pop vitamin D instead. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, low levels of “D” are linked to daytime sleepiness. Here’s why: Vitamin D helps keep bones and muscles healthy – so too little can cause weak muscles, and sore joints that could keep you up at night. Also, low vitamin D levels are linked to inflammation – which directly causes sleepiness. So start popping up to a‑thousand International Units of vitamin D daily. Especially if you suffer from milk allergies, or are a vegetarian or vegan, and are getting less “D” than average.

First: Emotional stability. The physical stability needed for a handstand can help you feel more emotionally calm and centered. Because our body can dictate our emotional state.

Handstands also build physical strength. It takes a lot of muscle to hold yourself up, so it’s a great workout for your arms, core and back.

If you can’t do them on your own, ask someone to assist you until you can do it alone.

Whether it’s black or green, a daily cup of tea may help you to live longer. The reason? Because it soothes your heart. Research from Johns Hopkins found that people who drink between 1 and 3 cups of tea a day have less calcium buildup in their arteries… which makes them 35% LESS likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those who DON’T drink tea.

Go to bed wearing earplugs! A joint study between British and Swedish researchers found people who feel foggy and slowed up in the morning probably aren’t producing enough cortisol, a natural brain-energizer that wakes us up, and heightens our alertness. But wearing earplugs to bed blocks low levels of overnight noise – like nearby traffic, or barking dogs. And research shows that when the quality of our sleep improves, our brain churns out more cortisol in the morning – giving us more focus and energy.

What we watch while doing cardio at the gym can impact our workout, according to Australia’s University of Western Sydney. For example, skip news or game shows, because whatever triggers deep thinking can tank your workout intensity. Instead watch shows with a physical component that’ll inspire you to work up a sweat, like “The Amazing Race,” or a sporting event. Because research shows when people watch a video of someone else being active, it increases blood flow, heart rate, sweat and respiration.

Now that it’s wintertime and we still need to exercise, do you swim at the local YMCA – or spend all your free time in the pool? If you spend more than 6 hours in a pool every week, you could be putting your teeth at risk! Because pool water that contains too much chlorine is dangerously acidic… and when highly-acidic water comes into contact with tooth enamel for extended periods, you can develop so-called “swimmer’s calculus”… a build-up of calcium that can turn your teeth yellow or brown. Excess chlorine can also leave your teeth brittle and sensitive. So, if you swim frequently, brush your teeth when you climb out of the pool. Also, consider using a fluoride rinse to help strengthen your teeth.

So you want to lose weight, drink less, exercise more, and de-clutter your house. What should you tackle first? ALL of it! That’s according to a study at UC Santa Barbara.

When researchers had study participants commit to eating better, exercising more, cutting back on alcohol, getting more sleep, and practicing mindfulness all simultaneously – it worked! After 6 weeks, the study subjects showed improvement on all fronts. They were stronger, healthier, had higher self-esteem and were happier.

Brain science professor Michael Mrazek led the research and he says each lifestyle change supported the others. Exercising makes it easier to sleep… sleeping well makes it easier to eat well… and being mindful makes it easier to make good choices. So, if you have a lot of changes you’d like to make, go for it! Do them all at once.

Visualize the ingredients in it! For example, if you’re wanting to avoid sugary soda, use your imagination, and visualize 10 sugar cubes stacked in a glass. Or, if a candy bar sounds tempting, picture test tubes filled with chemicals, like the preservatives and emulsifiers you can’t pronounce on candy bar packages. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, when we SEE what we’re actually considering consuming, we’re much less likely to want it.

…swing your arms. Holistic medical expert Dr. Kazuko Hillyer says, when we’re worried or anxious, we tend to tighten up physically. We’ll cross our arms, slouch, or curl up in a ball. It’s a natural reaction, because we’re literally protecting our vital organs. But to break out of that mindset, open up your body and swing your arms. That’s a form of embodied cognition, in which your body movement informs your brain, instead of the other way around. And by forcing yourself to adopt carefree body language, your brain gets the message there’s nothing to fear. As a result, you’ll start pumping out calming alpha brain waves, and it’ll take less than 30 seconds to feel better.
