Can holding a grudge really hurt your health? Absolutely! Osteopath Vicky Vlachonis says stress and negativity can trigger a vicious cycle by producing the stress hormone cortisol, which interferes with your body’s natural healing mechanism. That can lead to increased physical pain, and reduced self-esteem, which can lead to even more negativity, and cause the destructive cycle to start all over again.

The good news, just admitting you’re holding a grudge gets you into the forgiveness ballpark. To fully let go, Vlachonis recommends what she calls “forgiveness meditation.” Here’s how it works: Every night, find a quiet place, sit with your eyes closed and repeat a forgiveness mantra, in your head or out loud. Something like: “I forgive those who have wronged me. I forgive myself. I let go of all anger, resentment and pain. I open myself to love, peace and joy – and I am thankful.” Do this every night before bed until you feel you no longer need it.

And that can vastly improve both your mental state, AND your physical health.

It’ll make you BOTH happier. That’s according to a new study from the University of Toronto. The researchers found couples that spend time hugging, holding hands, and touching each other lovingly are MUCH happier in their relationships and in life. The reason? Because physical contact triggers production of feel-good chemicals, especially the bonding hormone oxytocin, which makes couples feel closer, and has been shown in numerous studies to boost happiness.

If you have allergies – and you get migraines – that’s not a coincidence. People with allergy symptoms are 30% more likely to get migraines. And they tend to be more frequent and severe. Researchers say it’s because the trigeminal nerve is involved in both responses – and it’s the main sensory nerve in the face. It also interprets some stimuli – like a runny nose or itchy eyes – as pain, triggering a headache. The good news is: The meds that relieve allergies can lessen your head pain, too. And people who get allergy shots can cut the frequency and intensity of their migraines in half!

Your polyester team jersey, or cotton t-shirt? Microbiologist Dr. Adam Roberts says your synthetic jersey collects more bacteria than natural fibers. Because it offers less ventilation, and holds onto more dead skin cells, dirt, oils AND bacteria.

According to Stanford University researchers, mornings matter most. They found having a small victory in the morning – anything from getting to work on time, to fitting in a morning workout – drastically increases your odds of having a productive day. That’s because starting the day with a “win,” no matter how small, triggers the positive feelings that propel you to keep going.

Get a whiff of rosemary oil. According to the British Psychological Society, the plant compounds in rosemary boost our so-called “prospective memory” by about 75%. Which helps us remember to take medicine at 2 o’clock, or mail a birthday card on Friday.

Next: Want to reduce your stress and improve your memory? Watch your favorite sitcom. According to the Memosyn Neurology Institute, when people watched a comedy, their stress levels dropped. And people who watched funny videos had lower cortisol levels and did better on memory tests.

Final memory-booster: Get crafty. Mayo Clinic researchers found people who had a creative hobby and stuck with it into old age – or picked up a new hobby – were 73% LESS likely to develop memory problems.

If your cat is meowing a lot all of a sudden, don’t shush him, pay attention. Cats meow as a form of communication, and excessive meowing can be linked to medical problems, like dementia, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure. So if your cat is more vocal than normal, take him to the vet.

Also, don’t try to stop your cat from clawing – just give him something safe to sink his claws into. Because scratching and clawing are how cats relieve anxiety and release pent up energy. So provide scratching posts to help your cat’s mental health.

Sugar-free gum or mints? The gum wins! According to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, gum-chewing produces more saliva, which clears away the natural acids and leftover food particles that cause cavities. And Xylitol – the sweetener in sugar-free gum – eliminates bacteria that damage teeth and make your breath stink. Sugar-free mints have a similar effect – but because they dissolve quickly, they create less saliva, and don’t do as much to protect your teeth. But if you have pets you should avoid anything that contains xylitol because it’s toxic to them.

Is it okay to workout on an empty stomach OR right after you’ve eaten a big meal?

Yes, as long as it doesn’t make you feel light-headed or nauseous. Sports nutritionist Brittany R. Allman says when we exercise on an empty stomach, our body burns stored carbs and fat, which can speed up weight loss. And exercising on a full stomach can speed digestion by helping move food from the stomach to the intestines. Still, we’re better off eating a maximum of 200 calories about an hour before a workout, that’s a combination of carbs for quick energy, and protein to help prevent muscle breakdown. Like a banana, and a couple tablespoons of peanut butter.

Start meditating! The Cleveland Clinic says stress can cause your hair to thin. Because stress-related hormone fluctuations in the body accelerate balding and thinning by making the follicles age faster. So do something to reduce stress, like meditation, or tai chi. Men who do that regularly have 42% less cortisol coursing through their bodies, and are more likely to keep their hair.
