You can lose over 5 pounds in 12 weeks without changing what you eat, or how much you exercise. How? Drink a glass of water before breakfast, lunch and dinner. According to a study in the journal Obesity, it works simply by filling you up, so you eat less. And drinking TWO glasses of water before each meal helped people lose TWICE as much weight. It’s as simple as that.

Before making that appointment for a facelift consult, eat more cheddar, gouda and asiago cheeses. They contain vitamin K2, a nutrient proven to improve bone density. And one reason our facial skin starts to sag is the loss of density in our facial bones! So eat more of those aged cheeses and see if things don’t improve.

Have you ever seen someone else do something embarrassing and cringed, as if it was happening to you? There’s a name for it: Vicarious embarrassment. And it’s a sign you’re an empathetic person. Relationship therapist Dr. Sherry Amatenstein says, the more compassionate you are the more intensely you’ll feel other people’s embarrassment. And it has its root in the brain.
What happens is, two regions of the brain light up, one linked to empathy, one linked to pain. You may also start to sweat and blush. And it makes you feel as if what’s happening to the woman, who fell into the fountain while taking a selfie, could easily happen to you, too. It means you’re humble; you can put yourself in someone else’s shoes. You have vicarious embarrassment.

That’s when you’re sleepy and weepy, and get overly emotional. And there’s a reason for it. Because when we’re sleep-deprived, activity increases in the brain area that produces emotion. Plus, when we’re tired, our ability to control our emotions is weaker.

So if you cry at commercials when you’re tired – or burst into tears when someone gives you side-eye, that’s why. You’re sweepy.

This may be the most fun way to improve your immune system: Kiss your partner! According to the journal Microbiome just 10 seconds of French kissing can transfer 80 million germs from one person’s mouth to another’s. Yes that’s a lot of microorganisms, but the health benefits are huge. Because when we’re exposed to other people’s germs, it helps us build immunity to those germs.

Registered dietician Kristen Smith says one serving of ice cream provides 10% of the calcium we need daily. And calcium is proven to reduce tension and anxiety. Plus, the fat in ice cream helps our body absorb minerals and nutrients that help regulate mood. Which is why people who eat full-fat foods have lower rates of depression than people on low-fat diets. So how much ice cream can we have daily? One half-cup. That’s about the size of a tennis ball. If you’re watching your calories, get slow-churned ice cream. It contains more air, which means fewer calories per serving.

It turns out, the more fiber in your diet the better you’ll sleep. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, people who munch more high fiber foods – like beans – spend more time in the deep, restorative stages of sleep. And in the study, people eating more fiber cut the time it took to fall asleep in half. And it only took one day for the changes to take effect. So why does fiber help us sleep better? Because it takes longer to digest, so the nutrients are released more slowly into the bloodstream. And that helps the body have an easier time winding down at night.

You can now learn CPR on your next airport layover. Kiosks are popping up in airports – like Dallas, O’Hare, John Wayne in Santa Ana, Cleveland, and Atlanta – that give 5‑minute hands-only CPR instruction. You’ll learn on an interactive mannequin so you’ll know if your chest compressions are too hard, or not strong enough. Look for a CPR kiosk next time you fly. Or find one at Heart.org/HandsOnlyCPR

Do this to ease the pain: Cross your fingers. The journal Current Biology says crossing the injured finger over another can reduce the pain you feel. The researchers say it works because changing the position of your fingers fools the brain into feeling less pain.

The next time you make a salad, save the cucumber peel. It’s a good way to keep ants away without toxic chemicals. Just place cucumber peels where you have ants, like along a doorway. The rind has alkaloids, which give it a bitter taste, and a scent ants can’t stand… So they’ll find somewhere else to march to.
