Their speech sounds more formal. When we’re comfortable, we tend to use contractions, like “won’t” and “don’t.” But lying takes more mental effort, according to psychiatrist Dr. Alan Hirsch. So, to buy ourselves a little more time to come up with a story, we’re more than twice as likely to unconsciously switch to more-formal phrases, like “will not” and “did not.” So, if someone starts avoiding normal conversational contractions – consider that a heads-up!

Does your energy tank at 3PM? Take a break! Our circadian rhythm causes our body temperature and hormone levels to drop about then, leaving us sleepy and sluggish. But Louisiana State researchers found people who work at computers all day, but took 15-minute breaks every 2 hours – solved problems faster and more accurately. Because switching tasks requires the brain to re-focus, which can boost your energy. Even if your new task is a walk down the hall to chat with a coworker.

You’ve heard wine contains heart-healthy antioxidants. But what if you don’t drink? Nutritionists at NYU say other foods contain the same exact antioxidants.

  • For example, you’ll find heart-healthy, anti-cancer resveratrol (rez-VARE’-uh-trall) in cranberries, peanuts, pistachios, dark chocolate and cocoa powder.
  • There’s immunity-boosting and inflammation-fighting quercetin (QWER-set-in) in apples, blackberries, citrus, and dark cherries, as well as onions, parsley, sage, and both green and black tea.
  • And you’ll find resveratrol AND quercetin in blueberries and grapes.

Just tap your forehead for 30 seconds. That’s from the Weight Loss Program at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City. It works because, when we get a craving, it gets lodged in the brain’s visual cortex. But by tapping on our forehead, we engage the same part of the brain, which dislodges the image and suppresses the craving. But for this tactic to work, you have to look up at your fingers as you’re tapping. So you get the physical sensation AND the visual image of the tapping.

Why you should keep your windows rolled UP in traffic.

Stuck in traffic? Keep your windows rolled up and the A/C on. Because the air inside your car is healthier for your heart! That’s according to Taiwanese researchers. They found when people kept the air on during their commute, measurements of their cardiovascular health were as much as 32% better. That’s compared to people who rolled their windows down instead. The reason? Because the A/C filters out automobile exhaust particles, a type of pollutant that can cause a cascade of internal inflammation. And over time, the inflammation can disrupt your heart’s electrical signals, and raise your risk for a heart attack. Again – want to boost your heart health? Keep your windows closed, and the A/C on when you’re stuck in traffic.

Are you in pain? Listening to music can help! A study at the University of Utah Pain Research Center measured the effect of music on the perception of pain – while people were having their fingertips jolted by electricity. The surprising result: The more the participants became absorbed in the music, the less painful the electrical jolts felt – even though the intensity of the shocks stayed the same.

To reduce your risk of catching a cold: Splurge on papaya! Because papayas have more vitamin C than oranges. They’re also loaded with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps protect against cellular damage, and decreases your risk for chronic diseases, like diabetes and heart disease.

You may not believe me if you spend time around kids – but they actually RELAX us and help us chill out. Because despite the temper tantrums, neediness and constant questions, in the grand scheme of things, kids are little stress busters. The experts at Arizona State say it’s because kids get us involved in things where we interact and socialize with others, from play dates to classroom parenting duties. And the more social connections we have, the lower our stress. So next time you’re driving your kid to ANOTHER birthday party, think of it as something that ultimately benefits YOU.

Are your feet sore and tired at the end of the day?

Stretching your muscles and tendons can help, by relieving the strain in your heels and arches. Physical therapist Dorothy Cohee suggests standing by a counter or table so you’ve got something to hold onto. Then, do 10 to 15 heel raises where you slowly rise up on your toes, and sink back down to the floor. Then, keep your heels on the floor, and lift both sets of toes up and down another 10 to 15 times. Do that and your end-of-day foot pain could soon be a thing of the past!
