How does a nice piece of grilled fish sound, complemented by a crisp glass of wine? That combo is a one-two punch for heart health. Both the fish and the wine are healthy on their own. But a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found the combination of the polyphenols in wine make it easier for our cells to absorb the Omega-3 fatty acids in the fish. And just 5 ounces of wine will do the trick.

And if you add a side dish of red peppers with garlic to your wine and fish, it’ll trigger the production of blood-vessel relaxing compounds – which will help lower your blood pressure – and boost your heart health even further.

Parsley! It’s a top source of two cancer-fighting compounds: apigenin and luteolin. And when those two plant compounds are combined, they help prevent breast cancer and slow the growth of existing cancer cells. So, try using parsley in salads, smoothies, and as an herb on grilled chicken or fish.

B3-Nicotinamide2-wp

Here’s a relatively cheap way to drastically reduce your risk of skin cancer: Pop a vitamin B3 supplement. The University of Sydney found a derivative of B3, nicotinamide, can prevent up to a quarter of non-melanoma skin cancers.

Nicotinamide is the water-soluble, active form of vitamin B3. It’s also commonly found in meat, fish, nuts and mushrooms.

And in a study of nearly 400 people, those who took the B3 supplement slashed their risk of developing basal and squamous cell carcinomas by nearly 25%. And those two types of skin cancers account for 80% of ALL skin cancer cases. The study used a 500‑milligram supplement – but talk to your doctor about it first. And make sure you’re taking the active form of B3 with nicotinamide. That’s what turns off cancer-causing pathways.

If you want to live at least two years longer – or more – eat plenty of fish! That’s the gist of research from the Harvard School of Public Health… which found the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish lower our risk for heart disease, depression, asthma, Alzheimer’s and more. The types of fish with the most Omega-3s include salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, herring, and mackerel. And the researchers recommend eating at least two servings a week.

…like wild salmon and sardines, three times a week. According to Kyoto University in Japan, those who eat a diet high in fish – or omega-3 fatty acids – gain up to 25% less body fat than those who don’t consume as much fish. The reason? Fish oil turns our white fat cells – the ones that create our love handles – into brown fat cells. Those are the kind that rev our metabolism and help us burn more calories! So, make fatty fish a bigger part of your diet to lose weight.

You’ll have a 62% lower risk of developing malignant breast cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, women on a Mediterranean Diet, who consumed 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil a day, got the biggest benefit. It’s down to the oil’s antioxidants, which have been shown to kill cancer cells and halt tumor growth. So splash some extra virgin olive oil on your pasta, in your salad, and as a marinade with herbs on chicken or fish.

Salmon. Eating two 4-ounce servings of wild salmon a week makes you 42% less likely to suffer hearing loss. That’s according to a large-scale study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. If you can’t get wild salmon, tuna and mackerel will do the trick too. Why does it work? Because the omega-3 fatty acid in these fish improves blood flow to the inner ear. Those fatty acids guard your eyes too, by protecting the cells that deteriorate with aging.

Serve them with foods they hate even more. After studying the foods trashed by kids in the National School Lunch Program, researchers found more vegetables are left uneaten on days when the entrée is really popular… like burgers, chicken nuggets and pasta. But when kids aren’t crazy about an entrée – like fish – fewer vegetables get tossed and more get eaten. Because if a kid really hates fish, the broccoli they think is so-so is gonna taste a lot better by comparison.

That’s someone who’s predominantly vegetarian, except they eat fish. If so, your risk of colon and rectal cancers are 43% lower. In fact, according to the American Medical Association, pescatarians have a much lower cancer risk than even vegans! So what’s the big difference? The fish, of course. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish have an anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer effect.
