Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, the mental and physical improvements of better sleep are similar to what lottery winners felt after landing a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot!

The study on over 30‑thousand people lasted 4-years. And those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier than those who relied on sleeping pills.

Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, better sleep triggers mental and physical advantages similar to what lottery winners feel after winning a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot! The 4-year study found those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier. Those who relied on sleeping pills had worse physical and mental health. So if you want to feel like a million bucks – or at least a quarter-of-a-million – get some quality sleep.

Ask someone to give you a back massage! Massage prompts the release of feel-good neurotransmitters almost instantly. It also reduces the production of inflammatory compounds that make pain worse. And the results can last up to 24 hours!
And a massage works on a headache whether you get a back massage, or a leg or foot massage. And it doesn’t have to be a deep tissue massage either. Even light pressure will do the trick.

You know that having close friends is one of the keys to longevity and wellbeing. But even being on good terms with your neighbors has benefits. Researchers from Rutgers University analyzed a 10-year study involving 1,000 adults. And they found having regular, positive contact with neighbors was linked to a greater sense of self-worth and purpose. Even if you just wave hello – or let a neighbor borrow your hedge clippers. It’s all down to the fact that our daily lives can be enriched by these seemingly minor encounters… which makes us feel like we’re part of a community, and that we add value to a larger social network – which has been proven to boost our health.

It’ll help you bond with others and reduce feelings of pain. That’s from a study in the journal Biology Letters. Because when we move in sync with others, everyone’s mirror neurons light up, which facilitates bonding. And the physical activity and music encourages the brain to release feel-good chemicals that blunt pain. Two solid reasons to get your groove on!

Think of two happy events in the past – like a birthday or a compliment from a stranger – and two happy events you’re looking forward to. University of Michigan researchers say imagining good times triggers similar emotions to what we experience DURING those good moments. And thinking about the past and future makes us feel like our lives, overall, are good.

Do we really need to cool down after a workout?

cool-down-wp

Yes, but NOT because it helps our body recover faster. It’s because doing a cool-down makes us ENJOY our workout more. Kinesiologists from Iowa State University say people who do a cool-down remember their workouts as more pleasant than exercisers who don’t cool down. And it makes them more likely to continue working out. That’s because we tend to remember the LAST part of an experience more vividly than any other part. So if the last section of our workout was a feel-good cool-down session, we’ll think the ENTIRE workout was more pleasant. So what about any physical benefits? Well, doing a cool-down – say by walking after a run – can reduce the chances of dizziness or fainting. Because blood tends to pool in our lower extremities if we work out hard, and then stop cold. So spend 5 to 10 minutes doing an easier version of your workout – or some simple stretches – to get the mental and physical benefits.

How many miles do you think you can run? Answering questions like that can enhance your workout. Dr. Jane McGonigal is a performance studies expert – and she says simply making a prediction in your head triggers production of the feel-good chemical dopamine… which can help you work harder without feeling like you’re exerting yourself more. Because the increased dopamine gives you a bigger sense of determination – and distracts your mind from focusing on the effort you’re making. So just before you start your run, guesstimate how long it’ll take to do your first mile. You’ll end up pushing yourself to make that time, or beat it.

Here are the pros and cons of letting your pet sleep in your bed:

Pros: Dr. Natalie Dautovich from the National Sleep Foundation says we humans feel vulnerable in bed and while we’re sleeping… So having an animal nearby can make us feel more secure. Pets also lower our blood pressure and calm our nerves, so we have an easier time drifting off. Plus, if you’re single, snuggling up with a pet provides the same feel-good dose of oxytocin that we get from cuddling with a partner.

So what about the cons of sleeping with your pet? On the relationship front, animals create a physical barrier between you, so you’re less likely to kiss and cuddle each other – and more likely to cuddle your pet. That’s according to marriage and family therapist Dr. Kat Van Kirk. Plus, if you have allergies, you’re getting up close and personal for 8 hours with dirt, dander, pollen, mold and dust mites – all from your pet’s fur. Which can greatly increase your allergy symptoms.

coworkers-reduce-death-wp

It’s your coworkers. A study in the journal Health Psychology says the emotional support we get from our colleagues reduces our odds of an early death significantly. That’s because our work buddies increase levels of the feel-good hormone oxytocin – while suppressing our body’s response to anxiety and stress. And over time, that combination encourages longevity.
