Like, if your teenager doesn’t answer their phone, they must have been abducted? Or if your husband is late coming home from work, he was probably in an accident?

Well, according to clinical psychologist Dr. Martin Seif, pretty much everybody has dark thoughts from time to time. And we humans are bad at assessing risk. So our fears are usually way out of proportion to the chances of actual danger. And worrying is part of human nature. When we have something valuable – like loved ones – it’s natural to worry about something bad happening. It only becomes a problem if those worries start controlling your life, or you try to control the lives of others because of your irrational fears. Also, Dr. Seif explains that scary thoughts you can’t shake can be a symptom of anxiety or depression. If that describes you, consider talking to a therapist.

Here’s the best way to fight stress, and calm your worried mind: Write your concerns on a piece of paper, crumple it up, and make a three-pointer into the nearest wastebasket. Psychologists say this eases stress and strain because our brain links the act of tossing out our worries on paper with eliminating actual negative thoughts inside our brain, leaving us feeling calm and relaxed, and ready to move on, worry-free.

…swing your arms. Holistic medical expert Dr. Kazuko Hillyer says, when we’re worried or anxious, we tend to tighten up physically. We’ll cross our arms, slouch, or curl up in a ball. It’s a natural reaction, because we’re literally protecting our vital organs. But to break out of that mindset, open up your body and swing your arms. That’s a form of embodied cognition, in which your body movement informs your brain, instead of the other way around. And by forcing yourself to adopt carefree body language, your brain gets the message there’s nothing to fear. As a result, you’ll start pumping out calming alpha brain waves, and it’ll take less than 30 seconds to feel better.

Start cleaning your debit and credit cards! Because they’re constantly being touched by cashiers, and shoved into card readers and ATMs… picking up tons of germs along the way. So, what’s the best way to clean your credit cards? Grab some disinfecting wipes, clean them thoroughly – then let them dry completely before putting them back into your wallet.

According to a recent study, women are bigger hypochondriacs than men… That means, we frequently think something’s wrong when it isn’t. But all that worrying pays off in the long run! Since we women tend to worry more about our aches and pains, we also tend to seek medical help sooner – so we’re less likely to die from a serious illness. That’s compared to men, who are more likely to ignore things until they get really serious.

You can stop your worries cold – simply by brushing your teeth!
Clinical psychologists say that brushing your teeth instantly stimulates most of your senses…… Including taste, smell, touch and hearing. In fact, the act is so distracting, it interrupts the worry cycle. Plus, the minty scent increases production of calming beta brainwaves.

Like your messed-up lunch order, or the driver who shouted, “Learn to drive” for no reason. Clinical psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo says that psychological stress – even in small doses – can cause physical stress… And that hurts our immune system…and diminishes thyroid, brain and heart function…It also increases abdominal fat. Her recommendation? Take a deep breath…And ask yourself, “Am I really going to allow a jerky driver to mess with my health?”…And let it go.

Purdue scientists found that negative thinking triggers your stress hormones. And when stress hormones are elevated for a long period of time, it weakens your immune system and body functions. The good news is, the people in the Purdue study who found good ways to cope with their worries lived longer.

One strategy to eliminate anxiety: become a volunteer. According to the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, selfless actions distract you from stress.

 Sit in a rocking chair!

Researchers at the University of Rochester recruited adults with anxiety. The more the volunteers rocked back and forth, the calmer they felt. In fact, people who rocked for 30 minutes a day were 30% less stressed.

So, why is rocking a stress-reliever? The rhythmic motion causes your brain to produce feel-good chemicals that calm your nerves, and help suppress pain signals. Kind of like when you were rocked to sleep as a baby.
