In one study from the University of Rochester, people who looked at something green felt significantly calmer and happier. It works because green is associated with peaceful, natural settings – which can help relieve anxiety and stress. Scientists even call it “the green effect,” and theorize that our brains have evolved to relax at the calming sight of trees and grass.

Weirdly, our hair gets greasier in the winter. It sounds counterintuitive, since you’re sweating less – but here’s how it works: Outside winter air is drier, and our scalp secretes more oil to compensate. So don’t make your scalp any drier by using a clarifying shampoo. Instead, you may want to try a moisturizing shampoo.

How many food-related decisions do we make in a day:

Is it 25, 75, or over 200? It’s over 200! Roughly around 230 food-based decisions a day. That’s according to psychologist Susan Albers, the author of “Eat Q” – like I.Q. And all those food decisions are hurting us – because we only have a limited amount of willpower to resist the fries, and go with the quinoa! So it’s best to take some of those decisions off the table. If you plan out your lunches every week – and stick to a shopping list at the market – you’ll make some of those decisions automatic, freeing up your willpower for when you really need it.

If the weather outside is frightful, here are a few tips to help you warm up fast:

First: Warm yourself up instead of trying to warm up your environment. Because it’s easier to change your body temperature than the room temperature. So instead of turning up the heat, add another layer of clothing.
Next: Invite a bunch of friends over for a cookie baking party. The oven will warm up the house – as will the body heat from having people over.
One final way to warm up – move your bed away from the wall. If your bed butts up against an exterior wall, the cold will seep through. So, move it away from the wall – and raise the whole thing higher… Like on bricks. Because the cold can be conducted up through the floor, too.

Because you’re more likely to have an asthma attack after a thunderstorm. That’s according to research from the University of Georgia. They say that the electrical currents caused by rain and lightning break up pollen into extra-tiny particles. And the smaller they are, the farther they’ll travel on the wind. So if you have asthma and a storm is coming – stay indoors, even afterward.

Studies show that 56% of us have trouble sleeping between Thanksgiving and New Year’s…And it’s often because of adrenal exhaustion. That’s where high levels of the stress hormone cortisol overwhelm your adrenal gland, causing a drop in the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin.
How can you improve your adrenal function? Natural health expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends a low-glycemic diet…That means, avoid white flour and sugar…And stick with whole grains…As well as protein-rich foods, like meat, poultry, dairy, soy products, beans and lentils.

Keep your nose warm! Research at Yale University found that low temperatures make our immune system less effective, making it much easier for the cold virus to invade our system, and make us sick. So, try wrapping your face and nose in a scarf when it’s chilly outside……That way, the carbon dioxide you breathe out will warm the oxygen you breathe in – which will help keep the germs at bay.

If you think storing your toothbrush in a cover will protect it from the germs spewing out of a flushed toilet, you’re right. But you’re setting yourself up for other problems. Because a toothbrush inside a cover will have a hard time drying out completely. And a damp environment means one thing: Germs! So leave your toothbrush out in the open to dry out every day. Microorganisms can grow on it still, but they’re unlikely to make you sick. And replace it every 3 months. By then, the bristles won’t be cleaning your teeth as thoroughly.

First: Brew some chamomile tea – which contains compounds that can ease muscle spasms.
Then, kick back in a recliner, or on a pile of pillows with your head supported, to reduce the muscle tension in your neck and torso.
And apply a heating pad to your neck for 20 minutes. Physiology professor Dr. Charles Swanik at the University of Delaware says heat is relaxing…Plus, it increases blood circulation, which brings natural pain-relieving chemicals right to the sore spot.
