Whether it’s a fern, English ivy or even a succulent, like aloe, being surrounded by greenery prompts an immediate mood lift, and lowers your risk of depression. According to the University of Michigan, our brains are naturally primed to release feel-good chemicals in the presence of nature, and it also triggers a relaxation response. Even when we’re stressed! Being near greenery also increases our ability to concentrate, makes us more productive, and boosts memory by 20%.

Look at the last loving text you were sent and blow up the font like you’re majorly farsighted. According to German research, reading upbeat, positive messages can lift us out of a funk. But by blowing up the font to 28 points or larger, we can make those positive feelings last 20% longer! That’s because our brain interprets larger words as more important. So those loving text messages will have a more powerful effect.

You may not even be aware of it, but psychologist Dr. Susan Bartell says YES! Here are a few of the things that can bring you down – and what to do about them.

#1: Family heirlooms. Dr. Bartell says we feel guilty getting rid of them because they’re supposed to hold memories. But instead, they can weigh us down emotionally and cause physical clutter. So, Dr. Bartell says, let those things go. Ask another family member if they want it. If not – and it’s not “Antiques-Roadshow”-worthy – get rid of it.

What else could be bumming you out in your own home? Heavy drapes! Their physical weight and the way they block light can make a home feel old, sad, and tired.

Finally, old paperwork can make us depressed. It’s a constant reminder of bills and obligations. So shred anything you don’t need, and make a point of filing things away. That way, the sight of paperwork won’t drag you down emotionally.

…it may be time to make your go-to beverage green tea. Because compounds in green tea called catechins have been shown to help decrease levels of hormones linked to depression. That’s according to research from Japan’s Tohoku University. The researchers found that people who drank between 2 and 3 cups of green tea a day were 41% less likely to report feeling depressed, on average. But stick with freshly-brewed tea, not bottled. Because the fresher the tea is, the more mood-boosting antioxidants it contains.

It could be due to the lousy, depressing news you watched last night! Researchers found negative media stories increase stress levels – especially among women – and make us more anxious during future nerve-wracking events… like an upcoming face-to-face with the boss. So experts say to skip the negative news at night – and watch a “Friends” rerun instead.

Did you know that drinking coffee could reduce your risk of depression? A study at the Harvard School of Public Health analyzed a decade’s worth of data on more than 50‑thousand people. The result: Those who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop depression than non-coffee drinkers.

It makes sense. Harvard School of Public Health researchers found drinking 4 cups of regular coffee a day can reduce our risk of depression by 20%. That’s compared to people consuming caffeinated tea, soft drinks, energy drinks, or chocolate. Researchers aren’t exactly sure why caffeinated coffee is the best mood booster. But the Mayo Clinic says 400 milligrams of caffeine – about what’s in 4 cups of brewed coffee – is considered safe for most adults.

Get together with friends and family regularly and in-person. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University analyzed data on more than 11,000 adults… including how often they communicated with family and friends – either through calls, letters, emails, or face-to-face. The result: Those who saw loved ones in person were half as likely to be diagnosed with clinical depression – compared to people who had personal contact with loved ones only every couple of months.

You could be suffering from estrogen overload. Researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson found that excess estrogen triggers activity in the brain’s anxiety center… which can cause stress, and symptoms of depression. So, try this: Eat some broccoli! It’s packed with plant compounds that speed up the metabolism of estrogen in the liver. Which can smooth out mood swings, boost your mood, and cut your risk of anxiety in half.

More than your friends? You may be bummed out. A study from Northwestern University found that the more time people spent using their phone – the greater their odds of depression. The link may be that people use their phones as a lifeline, to try reach out to others. Or that someone who’s depressed uses their phone as a way to escape and NOT interact with people, face to face. Whichever the case may be, if you use your phone more than most, you may want to seek counseling. Try Locator.APA.org. APA stands for the American Psychological Association, and you can find a therapist near you.
