If you’d like to instantly eat less: Serve yourself! A study in the Journal Of Marketing found that when someone else dishes up your food – whether it’s your mom or the chef at a restaurant – you feel more obligated to eat what you’ve been given. But when we serve ourselves, we don’t feel that guilt. We subconsciously make healthier choices and give ourselves 30% less food. So when you can, serve yourself to eat less.

Ladies, are you seeing more hair going down the shower drain than usual?

Don’t panic. It doesn’t necessarily mean your hair is thinning or you’re going to end up with bald patches. Dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco says the average person loses about 40 strands of hair a day – to make room for the new strands coming in underneath. And most of it sheds when you shampoo. But since women are washing their hair less frequently these days – thanks to dry shampoo – it generally means more hair is coming out with every wash. Which means, if you only wash your hair once a week, you could be losing 200 hairs during that single shower – which can really seem like a lot.

So, when should you worry? If you’re losing a thousand hairs a day, that would be considered abnormal. If that’s happening, Dr. Fusco recommends putting the day’s “hair harvest” in a plastic sandwich bag – and taking it to your dermatologist to discuss it.

…because there’s a link between fried potatoes, as in French fries and potato chips, and skin cancer. It’s down to a chemical called acrylamide, which is formed when foods are fried, especially starchy ones, like potatoes.

It’s a toxic chemical known to cause reproductive problems and birth defects. It’s also found in cigarette smoke. But new research has found it raises a person’s risk of skin cancer by 13% over time. In fact, several potato chip companies settled a lawsuit… and agreed to change their manufacturing process to reduce the amount of acrylamide formed during the frying process. So limit the amount of fried potatoes you eat to reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Which is better: Jumping into a cold pool, lake or ocean… or gently wading in and getting acclimated to the temperature? Wading is the way to go. Family practitioner Dr. Shilpi Agarwal says diving into cold water shocks your body, which gets translated as stress. And with stress, blood leaves our skin, and heads to our vital organs, to protect them. So you’ll actually feel COLDER! But when you gradually wade in, your body doesn’t have the same stress response, so you acclimate faster and don’t feel as cold.

In fact, mosquitoes hate it. So mix a couple drops of lemongrass oil into your body lotion – and put some on before you head outside. It’ll repel mosquitoes for up to two and a half hours.

…know that these breeds don’t do well in water:

Pugs. They have such short nasal passages they can experience breathing difficulties and easily drown.

Don’t swim with bulldogs, either. Their bodies are so dense and compact, they can sink.

Next: Dachshunds and Basset Hounds. Their short legs make swimming difficult.

Finally, keep your Maltese out of the pool. They can paddle just fine – but prolonged exposure to wetness and cold can give them arthritis.

If skipping your morning coffee makes you feel grumpy, or even depressed, it’s not your imagination. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health found drinking 2 to 4 cups of caffeinated coffee improves mood. It can reduce the risk of depression by 20%, and cuts the risk of suicide in half! The researchers say caffeine acts as a mild antidepressant by boosting production of feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline.

What carbonated beverage do you choose when flying?

Why are people more likely to order ginger ale on a plane than on the ground? Some people think that’s because ginger is known to relieve nausea, like from motion sickness or anxiety. But the ginger ale on planes doesn’t contain any ginger… or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger concentrate for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So why pick ginger ale?

It’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We THINK it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, ANY carbonated drink would make us feel better. Because, according to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds and create carbonic acid. Like most acids, the carbonic acid hurts a little, but it’s a good hurt because it makes your brain release feel-good endorphins.

It could be the reason you’re targeted by mosquitoes! People with Type-O blood are 83% more likely to be bitten, because their skin secretes a chemical marker mosquitoes can detect from 50 meters away. What else makes you a mosquito magnet? Drinking. Alcohol raises body temperature – making you more visible to mosquitoes.

Get out in the world and TALK to people! Researchers at the University of Arizona found the happiest people spent 25% less time alone, and a whopping 70% more time engaged in face-to-face conversations. That’s because heartfelt conversations help us connect with our emotions, which creates closer bonds with others and triggers a boost in our health and happiness.
