The next time your commute to work is irritating – and then you get stuck in an annoying meeting – do this to dial down your frustration: Doodle. But not just any doodle.  Spend a few minutes doodling a pattern that contains nothing but curves – like ocean waves. Handwriting analysts say any movements that flow across the page like waves are calming. And psychologists say doodling is a perfect way to release tense energy.

Stuck in traffic? Keep your windows rolled up and the A/C on. Because the air inside your car is healthier for your heart! That’s according to Taiwanese researchers. They found when people kept the air on during their commute, measurements of their cardiovascular health were as much as 32% better. That’s compared to people who rolled their windows down instead. The reason? Because the A/C filters out automobile exhaust particles, a type of pollutant that can cause a cascade of internal inflammation. And over time, the inflammation can disrupt your heart’s electrical signals, and raise your risk for a heart attack. Again – want to boost your heart health? Keep your windows closed, and the A/C on when you’re stuck in traffic.

You may not believe me if you spend time around kids – but they actually RELAX us and help us chill out. Because despite the temper tantrums, neediness and constant questions, in the grand scheme of things, kids are little stress busters. The experts at Arizona State say it’s because kids get us involved in things where we interact and socialize with others, from play dates to classroom parenting duties. And the more social connections we have, the lower our stress. So next time you’re driving your kid to ANOTHER birthday party, think of it as something that ultimately benefits YOU.

Are you stressed? Balance your checkbook! People who balance their checkbooks once a month experience significantly less stress and suffer from fewer stress-related illnesses. Research proves it’s the amount of control people have over their money, not the amount they earn, that contributes to their wellbeing. So, knowing your current bank balance and getting your finances in order can reduce your stress.

How to set the tone for a calmer day

60% of people look at their phone within 15 minutes of waking up. That’s according to a Deloitte Global Mobile Consumer survey. And the other 40% check their phone within 5 minutes of waking – or less, like the 18% who say they look at their phone immediately. But The Stress Institute in Atlanta says, when we do that, we switch from the peaceful state of sleeping, to stressed-out, in an instant. Things like work emails, texts, depressing news stories, and social media updates startle the brain, sending it into panic mode, and triggering the release of stress hormones. Dr. Kathleen Hall founded The Stress Institute and she says, just seeing what’s on your phone puts your body on alert, and triggers a flood of adrenaline and cortisol. That roots your day in stress chemicals.

So what’s the smart move? Dr. Hall recommends starting your day with a phone-free walk. Even if it’s just in your neighborhood, while you’re walking the dog. We already know that spending time in nature helps us become more calm and grounded. And a relaxed walk enhances those benefits, by boosting circulation and metabolism, loosening tight muscles, and releasing tension. And that sets the tone for a calmer day.

Want to take a power nap – but don’t want to risk sleeping too long, and feeling groggy for the rest of the day? Take what experts call a “drop nap.” Sit in a chair and hold an object that, when you doze off and drop it on the floor, will make a loud enough noise to wake you. So something like a heavy book – or an empty plastic tumbler. That way, you’ll know you slept because you dropped it – and you won’t sleep too long.

Are you stressing out over a big decision you have to make? Think things over while relaxing in a hot bath or Jacuzzi. Scientists at USC say making an important decision while you’re stressed, whether it’s the day-to-day kind, or stress due to that particular decision, it makes you more likely to focus on the possible negative outcomes. But if you wait until you’re calm to weigh the pros and cons, you’ll make a better choice, and be much happier with your decision.

are you nervous?, are you stressed?, Connie Sellecca, conniesellecca, cortisol, essential oil, eucalyptus, intelligence for your life, intelligenceforyourlife, nervous, relax, relaxing, sniff, sniff eucalyptus essential oil, sniff stress away, stress, stressful

Yes, according to a study from Italy’s Orthopedic Institute. Researchers asked adults prepped for surgery to sniff essential oils. Those who smelled eucalyptus felt much calmer than those sniffing citrus, or plain unscented air. The reason? Eucalyptus or “gum” trees – contain a compound that cuts production of the stress hormone cortisol. And the benefits of eucalyptus kick in within FIVE MINUTES of your first whiff! So, next time you feel nervous, sniff your stress away with eucalyptus essential oil.

How you can avoid “stress traps.”

Some of the things we do in the name of alleviating stress can make it worse. So here are the most common “stress traps” to avoid, according to the latest science:

First: Be careful how much venting you do with friends. It seems logical to share our problems. But a study from Oklahoma State University found unless we’re asking friends for advice, most venting backfires. Because sharing details about whatever’s bothering you is like re-living the problem all over again. So, our body responds by releasing MORE stress hormones, not less. In other words: Only talk about your problems if you’re focused on finding solutions.

Also, when you’re stressed, that’s not a good time to cut back on coffee. Because, if you’re a regular coffee drinker, you’ll add caffeine withdrawal on top of the stress. Plus, a recent study found people who drank three daily cups of coffee performed better under stressful conditions. That’s because caffeine triggers the release of the feel-good chemical dopamine – making us up to 15% less stressed!

Because stress slows our metabolism to a crawl. A study from the University of Florida found chronic stress boosts production of betatrophin, a protein that inhibits an enzyme that breaks down fat. And that makes us burn about 14 fewer calories every hour. That may not sound like much, but do that day-in, day-out, and stress could cause you to gain 11 pounds in a year.
