Guys, when you see a doctor, are you totally honest about your symptoms and lifestyle habits? You may NOT be if your doctor’s a man. Rutgers researchers found men who buy into the stereotype that they’re supposed to be tough, brave and strong tend to believe male doctors are more competent. But tough guys also avoid showing weakness to other men, so they’re much less likely, to be honest with male doctors. But men who bit the bullet and saw a female doctor were much more honest. Because they felt showing vulnerability and admitting weakness to a woman didn’t diminish their status as a man.

75% of general doctor visits are for stress-related problems! That’s because stress can worsen symptoms of other conditions, and cause problems like headaches. So, we’ve gotta learn to cope with our stress. That means we should take time every day to relax and do something we enjoy. We’ll all be less stressed, and hopefully won’t have to spend as much time in the doctor’s office.

According to the journal Medical Care, having elective surgery on a weekend – versus a weekday – boosts your risk of death by 318%! That’s because fewer medical professionals are available on weekends. And hospital staffs tend to be less experienced, with less access to diagnostic tools. And patients are more vulnerable to complications within the first 48 hours, so even Friday surgeries are risky. So, when’s it best to schedule elective surgery? The University of Toronto says the 2nd time slot each morning, Monday through Thursday. When the medical staff is well-rested, and has already worked out any kinks in the day.

Doctors have discovered the best way to avoid blisters!

Whether you just couldn’t wait to wear your new shoes before breaking them in – or you’re running your first marathon. The answer is: Paper tape.

You know, the medical tape sold in drugstores to hold on gauze? It’s thin and flimsy, but it can prevent blisters. In fact, it works better than powders, antiperspirants, lubricants, Band-Aids or adhesive pads. That’s according to ER physician Dr. Grant Lipman, who also treats endurance athletes who run 25 to 50 miles a day in every kind of climate you can think of.

Dr. Lipman and his colleagues tested paper tape as a method of blister prevention on over 120 runners participating in an ultra-marathon event through the Gobi Desert. They put tape on just one of each runner’s feet.

After the race, only 20% of the runners’ feet that had been taped had blisters. But 81% of the feet that hadn’t been taped were blistered.

So if you hate blisters, get some paper tape. If it works for ultra-marathoners, it’ll work for you.

Where the minute a doctor or nurse starts taking your blood pressure, it spikes, simply because you’re stressed about being examined. Well, next time they’re about to put a blood pressure cuff on you: Take 3 or 4 deep, slow breaths over 30 seconds. In a study, people who did that lowered their systolic number by 15 points – that’s the top number. Deep breathing works to slow your heart rate, which triggers the reflexes that control blood pressure, and brings it down to where it normally is when you’re not on an exam table.

According to a recent study, women are bigger hypochondriacs than men… That means, we frequently think something’s wrong when it isn’t. But all that worrying pays off in the long run! Since we women tend to worry more about our aches and pains, we also tend to seek medical help sooner – so we’re less likely to die from a serious illness. That’s compared to men, who are more likely to ignore things until they get really serious.

We need to stop Googling our health symptoms…

Because we’ll only find a legitimate diagnosis 34% of the time. The rest is bogus information. That’s according to a study of popular medical sites by Harvard researchers. However, the two websites that performed the best in their study – and gave correct information most often were: MayoClinic.org and Symptify.com. So go ahead and check those sites – but it’s always best to see your doctor for a solid diagnosis.

Here’s a tip if you need to see your doctor fast!

If you need to get a same-day doctor’s appointment, your best bet is to call the office between 10am and 11am. By then, the receptionist will know about any cancellations. So they’ll be more likely to squeeze you in.

Here are two reasons to get the first doctor’s appointment of the day:

You’ll be seen on time, since your doctor hasn’t had other patients to delay her… Plus, you’ll be less likely to be prescribed unnecessary antibiotics. Dr. Jeffrey Linder from Brigham and Women’s Hospital did the research… and he found that primary care doctors are nearly 30% more likely to prescribe unnecessary antibiotics toward the end of the day. Because they’re wiped out by then – and it’s easier to give a quick fix and send patients on their way. But if you can’t get an early appointment, ask your doctor if the pills are really necessary. Because half of all antibiotics prescribed AREN’T. And when we take antibiotics too often, we risk becoming vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant bacteria – and overuse of antibiotics can lead to diarrhea, rashes, and yeast infections.

Did you hit traffic on the way to the doctors?

If the first thing your doctor asks at your appointment is “How was traffic?” – it’s not just small talk. Being stuck in traffic raises your blood pressure and triples your heart attack risk… So if you’ve battled traffic to get to your appointment, have your blood pressure checked before you leave, instead of when you first arrive.
