Walk for an hour a day. A study from France found that 4 to 7 hours of activity per week decrease your breast cancer risk by 31%. Increase the intensity and power-walk, and you’ll reduce your risk even more. Because working out harder burns more fat… which reduces your body’s excess estrogen output. And excess estrogen is linked to breast cancer, because it helps cancer cells grow.

Sip tea with every meal. Black and green teas contain plant compounds that fight cancer. But they only stay in your system for 8 hours – so you need to keep topping up with tea.

One more way to reduce your breast cancer risk: Eat this for a snack – a pear and half-a-cup of peanuts. That’s half the amount of soluble fiber you need in a day. It helps to keep your insulin in check – and high insulin may double your risk of breast cancer.

You’ll have a 62% lower risk of being diagnosed with malignant breast cancer. According to the Journal Of The American Medical Association, women on a Mediterranean Diet who consumed 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil a day, got the biggest benefit. It’s down to the oil’s antioxidants, which have been shown to kill cancer cells and halt tumor growth. So splash some extra virgin olive oil on your pasta, in your salad, and as a marinade with herbs on chicken or fish.

Sleep with an eye mask on. That’s according to Dr. Meir Kryger from the Yale School of Medicine. He’s the author of “The iGuide To Sleep” and he says the darkness provided by a sleep mask tricks your brain into pumping out more of the sleep hormone melatonin. And that not only improves the quality of sleep – melatonin is also toxic to cancer cells. That’s why two studies from Japan found that sleeping without any light exposure can cut your risk of breast cancer by 31%.

According to The National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in 8 women either has – or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. But the men aren’t safe, either. 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, too. So, we’re going to help lower your odds of developing the disease. Here’s what you should be doing:

First and foremost: Exercise. Research shows that it’s the number-one thing you can do to lower your risk. A study from the National Cancer Institute found that women who average 3 hours of exercise per week, over their lifetime, have a 23% lower risk of developing breast cancer. So, why is it a magic formula? Because exercise lowers estrogen levels – and estrogen is a well-known factor in cancerous changes in the breast.

Tip #2: Watch what you drink. Alcohol is a double-edged sword… While it’s been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, it increases your risk of breast cancer. One study found that each daily glass of alcohol raises a woman’s risk by up to 12%.

And lastly: Get more vitamin D.

One study found that women who got the most calcium and Vitamin D had a35% lower risk than those who got the least. Unfortunately, nearly 75% of us have inadequate levels. Many experts now believe that taking 1,000 IUs of Vitamin D daily is best.

I’ve got intelligent tips that come straight from doctors who’ve both treated and survived cancer themselves!

Here’s how you can protect yourself, according to Prevention magazine:

  • If you think something’s wrong, get it checked out ASAP. That’s the word from oncologist Dr. Julie Silver, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. She says she had a nagging suspicion that something was wrong for nearly two years… But she felt embarrassed to keep pushing her doctors to do more tests after two mammograms turned up “normal.” Dr. Silver now believes that if she’d persisted more, her tumor could have been found sooner, and treatment could have been handled faster. So, never be afraid to be pushy – because nobody knows your body better than YOU.
  • Always share your experiences with loved ones. That’s the word from Dr. David Johnson, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1989. He says he was reluctant to talk about his illness with his wife and daughter, because he thought it might worry them too much.

But a growing body of research now suggests that having a strong social support system could improve your odds of surviving cancer. That’s because your loved ones will always be there to encourage you to work harder during treatment.

  • Rethink your idea of a “normal” health routine. That’s a lesson Dr. Carolyn Runowicz learned after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. Before that, she says her idea of a “normal” day was drinking gallons of coffee, and eating out of the hospital’s snack machine! But cancer forced her to rethink those bad lifestyle habits. Now, Dr. Runowicz says her new “normal” involves working out as much as possible, and maintaining a strict Mediterranean diet. She says, the sooner you adopt a healthy lifestyle, the better off you’ll be.

A study from the American Cancer Society finds that many people are misinformed about their cancer risk… Here are some facts:

•39% of people think that living in a polluted city puts them at greater risk for lung cancer than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. But in fact, smoking is BY FAR the leading cause of lung cancer – it’s behind 90% of all cases.

•30% of people believe cell phones cause cancer. While the vast majority of research shows no link between cell phones and cancer, a few studies DO show a small risk. It’s really too soon to tell. So the American Cancer Society recommends going hands-free whenever you can to keep the phone away from the side of your head.

•And finally: 6% of people believe underwire bras can cause breast cancer. But there’s no evidence to support this.

Marinate BEFORE you grill!

Those burgers, steaks, or ribs sizzling on the grill are cooking up chemicals that can potentially turn your cells cancerous. High heat reacts with proteins in red meat, poultry and fish to create chemicals that are linked to cancer, especially of the colon and breast. And since they form within cooked meat, you can’t get rid of them by scraping off char. However, meat that’s been marinated in a mixture of thyme, rosemary, garlic, and black pepper has been shown to contain 88% fewer carcinogens after grilling. Marinate your meat for an hour to get the full benefits.
