Stand up for TWO of the hours you usually spend sitting. Researchers at the University of Queensland found 2 extra hours of standing reduces blood sugar levels by 2%, and drops triglycerides by 11%. That can help you avoid blood sugar dips and spikes, and boost your heart health.

Breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day. In fact, new research from Harvard University found skipping breakfast raises your risk of heart disease and heart attack by as much as 27%. That’s because skipping breakfast makes you hungrier, making you more likely to grab snacks and overeat at lunch. And doing that can lead to weight gain, hypertension, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes, all of which are risk factors for heart disease.

According to Yale University research, playing board games like Scrabble or Monopoly burns calories (but don’t eat any snacks while playing)… 20% more calories than watching TV. So playing just two one-hour games a week can help you lose weight – and reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. In fact, the Yale research says it can cut the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 15%!

According to Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Karin Michels, a lot of women don’t realize they’re lugging around health hazards in their handbags. For example:

Do you carry hand sanitizer in your purse? Dr. Michels says it’s great to kill germs on the go. But a lot of sanitizers contain triclosan – a chemical linked to tumor growth in animals. So, only use alcohol-based sanitizers, and ditch the ones made with triclosan.

Then, is your handbag stuffed with old receipts? Researchers say most printed receipts are coated with a chemical called “BPA”. And it rubs off on our hands and is absorbed through our skin. We can tell you that BPA has been linked to a higher risk of diabetes, cancer, and infertility. So, handle receipts as little as necessary… and see if the cashiers can email or text your receipts, instead.

…skip the white rice!

The Harvard School of Public Health found that the daily consumption of white rice makes people 1.5 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. That’s why registered dietician Jill Weisenberger recommends brown rice. It contains fiber, so it digests more slowly. Plus, it has magnesium, which helps your body use insulin more efficiently.

Overweight cats are at risk for diabetes, arthritis and a shorter lifespan. So here’s how to help your cat slim down:

First: Count their kibble. Just 10 extra pieces a day will add a pound to your cat in a year, which is like a woman gaining 15 pounds. So use a measuring cup.

Better yet, try canned food. Compared to kibble, it has fewer carbs, more protein and added moisture. And it’s a fixed serving.

One last cat-dieting tip: Don’t give treats out of guilt. Like, when you get home after being gone all day. Instead, play together for 15 minutes. You’ll both get a calorie-free mood boost AND exercise.

…forget the scale or how your jeans are fitting, just measure your neck! Because your stomach can get bigger or smaller depending on when you last ate or hit the bathroom, and how much sodium you’ve ingested. Your neck circumference isn’t affected by those things, so it’s a more accurate indicator of everything from heart disease to diabetes. So what’s a healthy neck size? For guys, anything under 16-and-a-half inches. A woman’s neck should be less than 14 point 2 inches around. If it’s larger, talk to your doctor, because it’s now seen as a health risk factor.

If you’ve been on antibiotics, take probiotics after you finish. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria – so you need to replenish the good stuff. And according to Cornell University, taking probiotics for 12 weeks after a course of antibiotics will balance your gut and immune system, and reduce your risk of diabetes by 30%! That’s because antibiotics interfere with how your body absorbs glucose and uses it for energy.

One of the best things to do for your body, especially if you have Type 2 diabetes, or pre-diabetes, is to take a walk after eating. When you do that, it gives your blood sugar a purpose. Because when your muscles are in motion they soak up glucose more efficiently. And that helps regulate and even out blood sugar. So try a 30-minute walk after meals – or at least your biggest meal of the day.

For example: Honey in your tea is awesome – but putting honey on your cuts and burns can help heal them! The best choice is Manuka honey from New Zealand – which is packed with a potent antibacterial compound called methyl-glyoxal. Your best bet: Choose one with a Manuka Factor of 10 or higher… Which means it’s medical grade. Then slather it on burns and minor cuts, and cover, for faster healing. You’ll find Manuka honey at Walmart, Trader Joe’s and on Amazon.

Next: Honey is great for diabetics – because it’s better at helping keep glucose levels stable, compared to regular sugar. So, talk to your doctor about trading honey for anything you might sprinkle with sugar.

Finally: Honey and COFFEE can soothe a cough. Honey calms a dry, raspy throat, and a stimulant in caffeine can help expand your airways. So, if you want to stop hacking up a lung, add a teaspoon of honey to your next cup of coffee.
