Maintain a healthy weight! According to the Cancer Prevention Center at the University of Texas, being overweight is on track to overtake tobacco as the leading preventable cause of cancer. And according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that the heaviest women had death rates from cancer that were 62% higher than women in a healthy weight range. In fact, one-third of all cancer deaths in the U.S. each year are linked to poor diet and too little physical activity. So what is it about being overweight that makes it a cancer risk? It’s the fact that excess fat changes hormonal activity. It causes higher levels of insulin, growth factors, inflammation, and gender hormones – and that increases your odds of developing cancer. So at your next doctor’s appointment, ask if they have any recommendations for your weight. Are you at a healthy weight? What should you aim for? Because getting to a healthy weight will greatly reduce your cancer risk.

It may be because you live on a busy, noisy street! According to the journal Occupational & Environmental Medicine, regular exposure to traffic noise makes us nearly 30% more likely to be overweight. And the risk is even higher if you’re not just hearing cars – but also planes overhead, trains, or road construction.
Because the noise raises our stress levels. And you know that the more cortisol that’s coursing through us, the more we tend to eat, and the more calories we store as fat.
So what can you do if you live in busy, noisy area? The researchers recommend drowning it out with soothing background music – or a white noise machine… or wearing noise-canceling headphones when you’re eating or need to focus.

Spending hours on the elliptical, for example, keeps levels of the stress-hormone cortisol elevated, and boosts fat storage. So, try interval training…That’s short bursts of intense exercise, followed by quick cool-downs. Like, running flat-out for 30 seconds, then jogging for two minutes to recover. Research at the University of Western Australia found that 15 to 20 minutes of intervals burned enough calories to help overweight dieters lose a‑pound a week…While 40 minutes of steady exercise resulted in NO weight loss.

It’s also up 32% in dogs, and 16% in cats…And that’s just in the last 5 years. Like the human version, pet diabetes is often linked to obesity.
Symptoms for dogs and cats include excessive urination and increased thirst. And experts say that early diagnosis is the key, so report any warning signs to your vet.

If you want to lose weight, the next time the waiter asks if you want fresh ground pepper on your salad, say yes! Piperine, the compound that gives black pepper its kick, may prevent fat cells from forming. Researchers say, one day, that compound could be used as a supplement to treat obesity.

You may want to try The Baltic Sea Diet! It’s recommended by the British Journal of Nutrition. The Baltic Sea runs along the coast of Sweden and nutritionists found that people who ate traditional Scandinavian foods were 43% less likely to be overweight. The diet is filled with whole grains like oats and barley – berries, vegetables, low-fat milk and fish. The diet has a lot of fiber – particularly from the grains.
