Hang out in a sauna at least 4 times a week! Finnish researchers analyzed 20 years’ worth of data from the Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. And they found people who spent 20-minutes in a sauna on most days were 66% less likely to be diagnosed with any form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. The researchers aren’t sure WHY sweating in a 170-degree sauna lowers dementia risk… but they believe it’s partly because heat increases the resting heart rate, which sends more oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

When most of us hear a scream, our heart jumps and starts racing. But it’s not the volume that spikes our adrenaline, it’s the sound frequency, according to New York University. When study participants were given MRIs, the rougher the scream – and the higher the pitch – the more activity spiked in the brain area linked to fear. That’s why we tend to jump and run when people scream.

What can reduce stress in everybody – young, old, men, and women? Hearing classical music played LIVE! A study in the journal Public Health found people who attended a concert had significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. And that was even true for people who didn’t usually go to concerts or weren’t familiar with the music being played. It’s partly because classical music has been shown to lower heart and breathing rates… and partly because experiencing the same thing with others makes us feel part of a community – and that social support reduces stress.

…make sure you have something cold to drink. Because the temperature really does make a difference. In a study from the University of Montana, scientists monitored people walking briskly on a treadmill, for 3 hours, in almost 90-degree heat. And the exercisers either had ice water to drink or lukewarm, room temperature water. The result? Study subjects had to drink twice as much lukewarm water as ice water, to maintain a healthy heart rate, and core body temperature. So if you’ll be exercising in hot weather, carry an insulated sports bottle filled with ice water.

What we watch while doing cardio at the gym can impact our workout, according to Australia’s University of Western Sydney. For example, skip news or game shows, because whatever triggers deep thinking can tank your workout intensity. Instead watch shows with a physical component that’ll inspire you to work up a sweat, like “The Amazing Race,” or a sporting event. Because research shows when people watch a video of someone else being active, it increases blood flow, heart rate, sweat and respiration.

You know those warning signs outside roller coasters that say “Do not ride this roller coaster if you have a heart condition?” Take them seriously! Because riding a coaster with a steep drop, that goes over 100-miles per hour, alternates between moments of gravitational pull and weightlessness – where your organs literally float inside you.
Also, some roller coasters are violent enough to reach forces 4 times greater than the Earth’s gravity. And can push your heart rate to 200 beats per minute… and trigger dangerous changes to heart rhythm. So if you have a weak heart – or a weak stomach – sit out those extreme rides.

If Fall weather is leaving you feeling kind of chilly, wear something red! According to color therapists, just looking at the color red can physically warm us up. That’s because red is the longest wavelength of visible light – just shy of infrared radiation, or heat… And it helps boost our heart rate and circulation.

Did you know that hugging can keep us healthy? The hug receptors in our skin send signals to the vagus nerve – which lowers our heart rate and blood pressure. Hugging also releases the bonding chemical oxytocin, which has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease.

Even if you’re fit enough to run a 5‑K or take a spin class – climbing a staircase can still leave you breathless. Cardiologist Dr. Nieca Goldberg says unless you’re a StairMaster junkie, climbing stairs can elevate your heart rate quickly, leaving you short on oxygen. Especially since you’re essentially doing uphill lunges and fighting gravity, while lifting your whole bodyweight one leg at a time. And running up 20 stairs versus running 20 steps on flat terrain combines aerobics with strength training. So yes, even if you’re in great shape, a flight of stairs can leave you gasping.

Load these two classical pieces on your phone: Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and “Air on a G String” by Bach. Both are about 70 beats per minute – which mimics your resting heart rate. So listening to them can slow your breathing, and heart rate, to a calmer pace.
