Go ahead and enjoy the salty snacks you like – like chips and pretzels – just make sure you exercise afterward. That’s because exercise naturally reduces your body’s response to sodium – by sweating. It also helps your blood vessels relax and allows for better blood flow.

We know that too much salt can spike our blood pressure. So, if you’ve overdone it with the sodium, because you ate things like canned soup and chips, here’s what to eat for dinner: A baked potato. Registered dietician Michelle Cook says baked potatoes contain tons of potassium, which helps remove excess sodium from your bloodstream. In fact, when your potassium level goes up, your sodium level automatically goes down. Other potassium-rich foods include cantaloupe, squash, halibut, and steamed broccoli. Potassium, the antidote to sodium.

The day you’re starting your diet, buy a new fancy water bottle that you love – fill it up – and keep sipping all day long. You’ll find it a lot easier to ignore your food cravings. A study of over 18,000 people found that those who drank 3 extra cups of water daily – on top of what they normally would have – ate 200 fewer calories, took in a lot less sodium, nearly 4 teaspoons less sugar, and over 20 grams less cholesterol. That’s because water diminishes your appetite. It also makes healthy foods taste better. And when you’re doing something healthy – like water – it subconsciously makes you want to do other healthy things. Like, eat more fruits and vegetables. And if you have a new, fancy water bottle you love – you’re more likely to use it.

You know you should cut back on salt to manage your blood pressure, but you can’t help reaching for the salt shaker. So what can you do? Eat more foods loaded with potassium. According to research from USC, increasing the amount of potassium-rich foods you eat is just as effective when it comes to lowering your sodium intake. That’s because potassium helps flush excess sodium out of your system. So eat more high-potassium foods, like baked potatoes, artichokes, spinach, beans, coffee, and bananas.

…and I’m not talking water weight from the bloat. In an Australian study, when people ate a really salty pasta sauce, they consumed 11% more food than those who ate a less salty sauce. Dr. Russell Keast is a professor of exercise and nutrition science. And he says it’s because excessive salt overpowers feelings of satiety. So you eat more than you normally would – because you don’t realize you’re already full. And that’s another good reason to watch your sodium intake.

If you like those little oyster crackers with your soup, don’t feel guilty eating them. A small packet is only 60 calories, and has about the same amount of sodium as half a slice of bread.

…and that’s good for our health. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people who reported having broth-based soup as part of their regular diet weighed less, ate fewer calories, and had smaller waists than people who didn’t eat soup regularly. That’s because soup is filling, so people tend to eat less overall. But – there’s a but… Soup eaters were consuming more sodium. So look for low-sodium soup – or make your own.

When you’re looking at the nutrition label on packaged food, how much sodium is okay? It’s important to know, since up to 75% of the salt in our diets comes from packaged foods. So use this simple ratio to keep your sodium in check. It comes from Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. He says look for a 1-to-1 ratio of calories to sodium, or less. So if a food has 150 calories per serving, it should have no more than 150 milligrams of sodium.

If you’re not counting calories during the holidays, doctors say you should at least watch your salt intake. Because hospitals see a lot of heart patients between Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. Most of the time it’s because of too much salt in holiday meals. Salt can be very dangerous because it promotes water retention, which can be fatal for anyone with a weak heart. To avoid a trip to the Emergency Room, instead of flavoring your holiday dishes with salt, use herbs, spices and other natural flavorings.

bloat-6-10

You know to avoid things like soda, sodium and broccoli if you don’t want to bloat.
But what if you’re already bloated? What then? Do this: Apply heat. Either from the inside, by sipping hot tea – or the outside, with a hot-water bottle or heating pad. The heat will relax your colon and help the gas work its way through your system. Or get some exercise. That can stimulate your GI tract and move the gas along. But maybe exercise solo – instead of at the gym.
