When you’re face to face with the free donuts in the break room, resist by clenching your fists. Doing that for just a few seconds can give you a surge of willpower. That’s according to the Journal of Consumer Research. When study participants did that, more often than not, they chose a healthier snack. Why does it work? Because we naturally tense up when we’re faced with something challenging. So it sends a signal to the brain that we’re faced with a tough task – and the brain responds by giving us a surge of mental energy. So clench your fists to resist temptation.

Cornell University found that people ate TWICE as many cookies in a messy kitchen, compared to a tidy one. That’s because visual clutter raises our stress levels. And when we’re stressed, we’re more likely to turn to unhealthy snacks for comfort – like cookies. So, the first step to taking control of your diet may be to clean up the kitchen.

The thing that ruins our diet is daily snacking.

On any given day, our snacking contributes to over 30% of the calories we take in – totaling over 900 calories, on average. But there may be a simple solution… Drink black tea. The antioxidants in tea keep blood sugar stable. And when our blood sugar levels remain steady, our hunger hormones don’t spike, so we’re less likely to snack! Black tea also stabilizes our stress hormones – so we’re less likely to soothe our stress with food. To get the best results, drink 3 cups of black tea a day.

Here’s some incentive to tackle your chores:

Cleaning your apartment for 30 minutes – doing mirrors, the kitchen floor, and the bathroom – burns over 150 calories…… Enough to cancel out that snack you just had.

Here’s a new nighttime snack for you: Jell-O. It’s one of the best sources of glycine – an amino acid that helps our body naturally reduce our core temperature. And as you know, cooling off the body triggers our sleep hormones. Glycine also relaxes nerves and muscles and acts as a mild sedative. So have a serving of Jell-O about 2 hours before bed and you’ll sleep more deeply.

Got the urge for a late-night snack? Stop and think first.

Here’s something to keep in mind when a late-night snack attack strikes. The food we eat fuels the hours ahead…Not the hours that have passed. So even if you haven’t eaten all day – and you make a big plate of pasta at 9pm at night – unless you’re staying up and being active for the next 5 or 6 hours, you won’t burn as much of it for fuel and you’re more likely to gain weight. So we want to do the majority of our eating when we’re active…That way, we’ll process the food we eat most efficiently. So when you eat, matters as much as what you eat.

What’s the absolute best snack you can eat on the job?

Walnuts! That’s according to Dr. Lenore Arab, a disease prevention expert at UCLA. Walnuts also have a good dose of healthy fatty acids – that improve your metabolism and help you feel full. But on top of all that, a big reason why walnuts make a good WORK snack is because of how they affect the brain. According to Dr. Arab’s research, people who eat walnuts outperform non-walnut-eaters in terms of memory, concentration, and “information processing speed.” All you need are 6 or 7 walnuts a day to get a mental edge over your coworkers and improve your overall health.

Which is worse: Going to bed full, or hungry?

NYU sleep specialist, Dr. Rebecca Scott says going to bed full is worse. That’s because it can cause acid reflux, which can wake you up, or cause restless sleep. But going to bed with a growling stomach isn’t ideal either. Low blood sugar could also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night. So if you’re hungry before bed, eat a very small snack, like almonds or yogurt. The protein will digest slowly, so your stomach won’t rumble – but it won’t be too heavy or fatty and keep you awake.

Here’s a great ‘willpower’ trick!

Do you need willpower to avoid a fatty treat, or stop yourself from buying new shoes you don’t need? Cross your arms! It’s a defensive posture that subconsciously tells your brain that you’re closed off to whatever you were considering eating or buying. Another trick? Squeeze something – even your steering wheel or just make a tight fist. It stimulates the brain area that regulates self-control.

Next time you go to the movies…

Get your snacks during the previews! According to research, people consume more than 80% of their calories before the movie begins. Once it starts, people are more focused on the movie than their snacks, so they end up eating less.
