A recent study in the journal Psychological Science found a direct link between our relationship stress and an appetite-regulating hormone called ghrelin. Basically, the more stress we feel, the hungrier we get! And unfortunately, lots of studies have shown that when we’re stressed out, we’re more likely to reach for high-fat, high-sugar treats, than something healthy… which significantly raises our risk for weight gain and depression. The good news? Researchers say just KNOWING about this reaction can help us stay healthy. Because while we can’t change how our body reacts to stress, we can change the foods we keep on hand. So, stock up on more fruits and vegetables, or Greek yogurt, than chips and ice cream! That way, you’re less likely to blow your diet the next time you and your partner argue.

If you want to stay slim, commit these two numbers to memory: 10,000 and 5. According to the journal Appetite, the only two weight-loss-maintenance methods that consistently work are taking 10,000 steps a day – and eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Doing those 2 things helped women maintain their weight loss for 2 years. So if you’ve reached your goal weight, remember 10,000 steps a day and 5 servings of fruits and vegetables to keep the pounds off.

Those reusable grocery bags may be good for the environment but not so much for your health.

Reusable shopping bags may be covered with germs. Our friend, microbiologist Charles Gerba, says reusable grocery bags can be contaminated with e coli because few people wash them out after carrying home their fruits and veggies and meat.

So make sure you wash yours in hot water and dry it thoroughly before reusing it.

They all contain major antioxidants. And the more different types of fruits and vegetables you eat – the better. Because people who get a variety of produce – and therefore a variety of antioxidants – have greater health benefits. So try eating more of these 3…

Grapefruit: The antioxidants in grapefruit, the ones that make it bitter, may help treat diabetes! They break down the fatty acids in your liver the same way diabetes drugs do.

Cranberries: They have antimicrobial properties – which means they protect you from infections. They also reduce the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries – and help prevent the growth of some cancer cells.

Finally, have more garlic. It lowers blood pressure and prevents certain cancers. It also lowers bad cholesterol – reducing your risk of heart disease.

Eat more white produce. Things like garlic, leeks, onions, apples, pears, bananas, cauliflower, and cucumbers. Research found that the people who eat the most white fruits and vegetables – or those with white flesh – have a 52% lower risk of stroke.

Why white-fleshed fruits and veggies are beneficial isn’t known. One theory is that those foods are high in dietary fiber and antioxidants, which lower blood pressure or cholesterol, and can protect brain blood vessels or prevent clots from forming. But before you OD on the white flesh of a POTATO – they’re not on the list, because they’re considered a starch, not a vegetable.
