But before you start cranking the air conditioning 24/7, clean your unit. Because, if you haven’t changed the filter and vacuumed out the vents, the moving air will spew out dust and debris, which can irritate lungs and trigger allergies. Plus, a dirty A/C can cost you money. Because, if the filter is clogged, the air won’t flow as well, which wastes electricity.

It can increase congestion in your sinuses and nasal passages. The solution is to get a humidifier – especially in the bedroom while you sleep. Dr. Neeta Ogdenis anallergist and immunologist – and she says that’ll keep your respiratory tract lubricated. However, other indoor allergens, like mold, can grow like crazy in a moist environment. So you want a happy medium between too dry – and too humid. So set your humidifier below 50%.

Some common things can make your symptoms worse, according to immunologist Dr. Clifford Bassett.

For example: Hair gel. It’s sticky and collects pollen throughout the day, which can end up spread all over your pillow and face at night.

And if you have a pollen allergy, avoid eating celery. There’s a protein in celery that’s very similar to pollen. It can confuse your immune system, making symptoms worse. And that goes for cooked celery too, so avoid it in soups.

What you wear on your next plane trip could be critical for keeping you and your fellow passengers comfortable and healthy.

For example, skip the heavy cologne and perfume. Travel expert Christopher Elliott says because of the re‑circulated air, your scent could permeate the entire aircraft, and overwhelm or even sicken your fellow passengers – especially young children and those with allergies.

Also: Don’t wear skinny jeans. They can constrict circulation and raise the chance of developing blood clots in your legs.

Do you fight hay fever with antihistamines, and still suffer from itchy eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing? Try a nasal steroid spray, like Flonase, instead. Researchers at the University of Chicago say nasal meds are more effective and faster-acting than pills and shut down allergy symptoms for 80% of people within hours. Plus, they don’t get into your bloodstream, so they don’t cause side effects like some pills can.

…eat orange foods, like carrots and sweet potatoes. They’re full of carotenoids – powerful antioxidants or plant pigments the body turns into vitamin A. Carotenoids can also stop the release of histamine, which is what causes sneezing, itching and red, watery eyes. Studies found eating a cup a day of carotenoid-rich foods can cut allergy flare-ups in half. Because the carotenoids make our immune cells more stable. Aside from carrots and sweet potatoes, you can also get carotenoids from butternut squash and spinach, even though it’s green.

You could be allergic to something under your own roof. For example:

Your fish tank. Having a fish as a pet is a good hypoallergenic option – but the tank can be harboring mold. So clean the tank and filter once a month.

Another allergy trigger? Your computer printer. They often emit volatile organic compounds and other particles that can trigger asthma and damage the lungs. So make sure your printer is at least 10 feet away from where you sit, and in a well-ventilated area.

If you have allergies – and you get migraines – that’s not a coincidence. People with allergy symptoms are 30% more likely to get migraines. And they tend to be more frequent and severe. Researchers say it’s because the trigeminal nerve is involved in both responses – and it’s the main sensory nerve in the face. It also interprets some stimuli – like a runny nose or itchy eyes – as pain, triggering a headache. The good news is: The meds that relieve allergies can lessen your head pain, too. And people who get allergy shots can cut the frequency and intensity of their migraines in half!

It could be what’s in your bedroom.

Like horizontal blinds. They attract more dust than fabric shades.

And anything stored under the bed attracts dust bunnies. So, pull everything out and vacuum under there once a month.

Finally: You may wake up with allergies because your shoes are in your bedroom. Because the stuff tracked in on the soles of your shoes can be a major allergy trigger. So if you can, leave your shoes outside the bedroom door.

Sure, it can make your kid’s teeth crooked. But they’d probably need braces anyway. In the meantime, it’ll boost their immunity and cut their chances of developing allergies! A study of over a‑thousand kids in the journal Pediatrics found those who sucked their thumbs for years were less likely to develop allergies as they grew. Because kids’ fingers are gross germ factories! But by ingesting germs in small amounts over time, they built a tolerance to things like pollen, pet dander, and dust. And if kids are thumb-suckers AND nail-biters, they get an even bigger immunity boost!
