They’ve been on the “Dirty Dozen” list from the Environmental Working Group for years. That’s a list of produce with the most chemical residue, which can include 50 different pesticides per serving. But apples are also healthy! So, buy organic, which can reduce your exposure to pesticides by 80%… or remove the residue by soaking your apples in baking soda and water for 10 minutes. University of Massachusetts researchers found that will remove up to 96% of the particles on an apple’s peel. The recipe? Add a teaspoon of baking soda to about 3 cups of water and soak your apples for 10 minutes and rinse. And you’ll be good to go!

Research at the University of Wisconsin found they can be a breeding ground for the bacteria Listeria. And that shocked researchers. Because it was previously thought apples were too acidic, and the caramel coating too thick for bacterial growth. But the problem is the stick! Poking a hole in an apple creates just enough juice to breed bacteria. If you can’t resist a caramel apple, only eat one that was kept refrigerated – or made without a stick.

Well, even if we don’t realize we’re doing it, the way our food sounds has a direct impact on how we think it tastes. And, generally speaking, we perceive crisp and crunchy food as tasting better than softer foods. Research in the journal Flavour found when people were asked to describe and evaluate different foods, the ones described as “crisp” were almost always rated as the most flavorful. So, think apples, bacon, potato chips, and even the crispy “fizz” of a freshly opened can of soda. The sound tells our brain if it’s fresh and good to eat, or if it’s spoiled and potentially bad for us. The thinking is that even when we KNOW chips are unhealthy, they still provide that satisfying “crunch” that our brain craves.

Eating one piece of fruit could help you eat healthier all week. If you eat it right BEFORE you go grocery shopping! Researchers from Cornell University found shoppers who had eaten an apple beforehand bought 28% more produce than cookie-eaters. They also bought less junk food. The explanation is simple: Once you eat a healthy snack, your subconscious guides you to STAY on a healthy path, with almost zero effort. But remember, the trick only works if you eat fruit right BEFORE you shop.

Next time you eat an apple, save the peel and rub the inside on your cleanly-scrubbed face. Skincare expert Cecilia Wong says the dose of vitamins C, A and E will soften your skin and help minimize lines. Plus, the peel has malic acid, which has an exfoliating effect similar to enzyme facial peels… But it’s gentle enough to do every day. Just rub the inside of the apple peel on your face, wait 5 minutes, then rinse.

That’s because apples are rich in butyrate – a compound that soothes the gastrointestinal inflammation that triggers gas and bloating. According to scientists, eating 3 apples a week will prevent indigestion and belly pain for 60% of us.
For the best results, stick with cooked apples, like applesauce or oven-baked apples. That’s because heat breaks down the simple sugars – AKA fructose – in apples… Which helps prevent the growth of gas-producing gut bacteria.

If you grew up in a home with a smoker, eat two apples a day. A study of 35,000 people by the National Institutes of Health found that it reduces lung irritation and helps prevent respiratory problems caused by secondhand smoke in childhood. So why do apples help protect and repair the lungs? Fruit-based fiber. So, a cup of raw blackberries or raspberries could get the same results. Or an apple and a pear. It turns out, the fiber in fruit benefits the lungs by reducing inflammation, and improving the body’s ability to process antioxidants.

Allergy sufferers……Put these things on your shopping list: onions, apples, blueberries, red grapes and green tea. According to the journal Clinical & Experimental Allergy, those foods are high in an antioxidant called “quercetin.” And research shows it prevents immune cells from releasing histamine – which is a protein that gives you symptoms like itchy, watery eyes and sneezing.
