When you’re asleep, it’s NOT normal to drool – that’s when you salivate, but don’t swallow. Because even at night, we swallow about 3 times an hour. So why do we wake up in a pool of drool? One reason: We sleep on our side, so saliva doesn’t collect in our mouth and trigger our swallowing reflex. Also, people with sleep apnea drool because their swallow-reflex is damaged. We also drool when we smell delicious food, even if we’re sleeping or the aromas are in our DREAMS. So, you drool at night because you’re a side sleeper, you have sleep apnea, or someone’s baking cookies at 2AM, at least in your dreams.

That’s from the journal Sleep & Hypnosis. In a study, adults filled out a popular sleep questionnaire, called the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. They noted which side they slept on, and whether their dreams were positive or negative. The study found that just 14% of right-side sleepers reported bad dreams, compared to 40% of left-side sleepers! Right-side sleepers also reported more dreams with feelings of safety or relief.

If you get nightmares – it may NOT be the spicy food you ate at 11pm – or the horror movie you just watched. You may have just gone to bed TOO LATE! That’s because people who stay up late throw off their sleep cycles. Here’s how it works: As morning approaches, our stress hormones naturally rise in an effort to wake us up… But, if your sleep cycle is off, your dreaming phase will coincide with your stress hormones rising – and cause a nightmare. So, go to bed earlier and you won’t have that problem… Because your dreaming phase and stress hormones won’t intersect.

Are you having trouble falling asleep because of what you watch before bed?

According to the journal “Neuroscience,” watching anything intense, like scary movies or the nightly news, can make it harder to drift off.

Researchers explain that seeing intense images before falling asleep makes those unsettling images stick, which basically strengthens our memories of them. It also makes us more likely to dream about them, and even think about them the next day. So, researchers suggest avoiding those programs an hour before bed so they won’t affect your dreams or mood.

If you wake up from a bad dream – don’t try to analyze it.

Let it go. Psychiatrist Stephen Quentzel says trying to figure out what a bad dream meant will only make it linger, and make it harder to fall back asleep. He says, the content of our dreams doesn’t have any significant impact on our waking lives, so don’t assume those dreams are trying to tell you something. They’re just pent-up anxiety being released.

If you want to remember your dreams, try eating more foods rich in vitamin B6. Things like hummus, tuna and bananas. B6 helps your brain churn out more dreams and remember them more clearly. That’s because it makes your brain more alert while you’re asleep. Just don’t eat too much – or your brain will become so alert that the quality of your sleep will suffer.
