Which is worse: Eating too much at a party – or drinking too much? Even if you’re not driving, drinking too much is a LOT worse. That’s according to registered dietician Stephanie Middleberg. She says, aside from possibly doing things you’ll regret, because drinking impairs your judgment, it also weakens your immune system. So you’re more likely to pick up an infection. Drinking too much at a party will also ruin your sleep. Sure you may sleep heavily at first, but once your body metabolizes the alcohol, your brain will wake up, causing restless sleep. Plus, drinking increases hunger for high-fat foods. So you may end up eating too much anyway. Bottom line: It’s best to limit your food and your alcohol intake at a party.

This may be the most fun way to improve your immune system: Kiss your partner! According to the journal Microbiome just 10 seconds of French kissing can transfer 80 million germs from one person’s mouth to another’s. Yes that’s a lot of microorganisms, but the health benefits are huge. Because when we’re exposed to other people’s germs, it helps us build immunity to those germs.

Dried cranberries, feta cheese, or sunflower seeds? Would you believe it’s the cranberries?

That’s because they have added sugar! The better salad toppers are the sunflower seeds or feta cheese. Both have only 100 calories – plus feta cheese has antibacterial compounds and blood pressure-lowering chemicals. And sunflower seeds are loaded with magnesium, which plays a key role in boosting our immune system, regulating our blood pressure, and keeping our bones strong.

If you ever step on a rusty nail, you may wonder: “When was my last tetanus shot?” But you might not need one. Until now, doctors would vaccinate for both tetanus and diphtheria in childhood… and recommend booster shots every decade. But Oregon Health and Science University researchers compared immunity levels of hundreds of adults who had and hadn’t had booster shots. The result: Tetanus and diphtheria antibodies last at least 30 years from ONE shot. Still not sure when you were last vaccinated? Ask your doctor if your 30-year anniversary for tetanus and diphtheria is coming up.

A foot massage! University of Miami researchers say a 10-minute foot rub can boost levels of virus-attacking white blood cells by 25%. A daily foot rub also lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which weakens our immunity. If your partner isn’t into giving you a foot rub, a do-it-yourself 10-minute scalp massage can have the same effect.

So can candied ginger or a ginger supplement. A study in Nutritional Biochemistry found that a compound in ginger stops the immune system from overreacting to the histamine that triggers allergies. But talk to your doctor. Because the volatile oils in ginger – called gingerols – have anti-inflammatory properties – which can interfere with blood clotting medications.

Take a look at your fingernails. Do you see a bunch of white flecks? If so, you may have a zinc deficiency. As many as half of us are zinc deficient – and zinc is needed to convert food into cellular energy. Zinc also improves your sense of smell and boosts your immune system. So, ask your doctor about popping a zinc supplement – or add these zinc-rich foods to your diet: Oysters, liver, roast beef, pumpkin seeds, lamb, peanuts, and Alaskan King Crab.

If you’ve been on antibiotics, take probiotics after you finish. Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria – so you need to replenish the good stuff. And according to Cornell University, taking probiotics for 12 weeks after a course of antibiotics will balance your gut and immune system, and reduce your risk of diabetes by 30%! That’s because antibiotics interfere with how your body absorbs glucose and uses it for energy.

If you’ve got a cold, I’ve got you covered. These are the best foods to eat – because they act like natural remedies for your symptoms.

First: For a cough, try 2 teaspoons of honey. Research in the journal Pediatrics shows honey can relieve coughs from upper respiratory infections – even BETTER than over-the-counter medicines. Honey coats the throat and has anti-microbial properties to kill infections. It also has antioxidants that boost the immune system. And it can be eaten straight from the jar, or in a cup of hot tea.

Next: If you feel headachy, eat a banana. They’re high in the pain-fighting electrolyte magnesium. And according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, people prone to headaches – including migraines – often have low levels of magnesium.

Also: If you’re feeling stuffed up: Try pineapple and chili peppers. Pineapple contains bromelain, which thins mucus… And chili peppers trigger a so-called mucokinetic effect that helps sinuses drain. It’s the capsaicin – which makes your nose run and eyes tear, but it thins mucus at the same time.

One final natural remedy for a cold: Pumpkin seeds. According to the Mayo Clinic, they’re packed with zinc. !’ve talked about the healing power of zinc many times before: Zinc keeps cold viruses from replicating in your body.

swarf-avoid-colds-wp

Keep your nose warm! Research at Yale University found that low temperatures make our immune system less effective, making it much easier for the cold virus to invade our system, and make us sick. So, try wrapping your face and nose in a scarf when it’s chilly outside……That way, the carbon dioxide you breathe out will warm the oxygen you breathe in – which will help keep the germs at bay.
