It could be the video games you play at night to unwind. Dr. Michael Grandner is with the University of Pennsylvania’s Sleep Medicine Program. He says the blue light from screens will disturb your sleep. But so can intense, interactive video games – like Call of Duty! They stimulate the brain, and boost production of stress hormones – making it nearly impossible to wind down and drift off. And by the way, nearly half of all gamers are women – it’s not just a guy thing. Bottom line: If you’re having trouble sleeping, you may want to cut yourself off from gaming at least an hour before bed.

Soda, energy drinks, and sleep-deprivation!

This may not come as a surprise – but now we know for sure: People who regularly consume sodas and energy drinks are more likely to be sleep-deprived. That’s according to a new survey of 18,000 adults by UC San Francisco… which found that people who usually slept about five hours a night, which is considered “short sleep” drank 21% more caffeinated, sugary beverages than people who got 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

And that’s a problem because other studies have linked short sleep with higher blood pressure and stress, increased levels of inflammation in the body, even poor kidney function. The researchers believe it’s because when your blood sugar is really high, your kidneys work overtime to get rid of it – which means you’re waking up repeatedly to pee. And because you’re sleep-deprived, you turn to highly-caffeinated energy drinks to get through the next day, which impacts your sleep the next night. So it’s a vicious cycle.

Bottom line: Want a better night’s sleep? Cut back on sugary, caffeinated foods and beverages.

Getting 6 hours of sleep a night is as bad as not sleeping at all!

So, if you regularly get 6 hours – listen up. Researchers found people who slept 6 hours a night for 2 weeks functioned as poorly as people who stayed awake for two days straight. And the sleep-deprived people had NO IDEA they weren’t functioning properly. They thought they were perfectly fine. Basically, our sleepy brain is in denial! But that lack of sleep makes us eat more, act more emotionally, worry more, drive poorly, make more mistakes at work, and makes us 400% more likely to get sick! So don’t trust yourself to know whether you’re sleep-deprived, trust the clock. And if you’re getting only 6 hours, find a way to get more.

Being sleep-deprived makes us hungry!

Being sleep-deprived makes us hungrier, because we need extra calories to power through our day. According to King’s College London, if we get fewer than 6 hours of sleep, the next day we scarf down nearly 400 additional calories – usually junk food. Because a lack of sleep throws off our hunger hormones, making them spike. And since a lack of sleep makes us moody and irritable, we tend to reach for high-fat, high-calorie foods to make us feel better.

Why did you sabotage yourself?

Have you ever done this? You knew you had an important day ahead – but you stayed up until all hours binging on your favorite shows. Why did you sabotage yourself?

Well, Indiana University psychology professor Dr. Edward Hirt says, when we sabotage ourselves, it’s our subconscious way of guarding ourselves against failure. Because, by being sleep deprived, we can blame the failure on a lack of sleep instead of not being good enough, smart enough, or prepared enough. Dr. Hirt says self-sabotage is incredibly common. His studies show the people who are most likely to do it are those who think trying and failing is the worst possible outcome. So they’d rather not try if they don’t think they can succeed. But in reality, people have more respect for those who do their best – no matter how things pan out in the end – than those who don’t give it their all.

Look around. Does it seem like everyone’s having a bad day, blowing you off, or uninterested in you? Then you’re probably under-slept.

UC Berkeley scientists had healthy people react to facial expressions after 24-hours without sleep. And they had trouble telling the difference between a smile, a smirk or a scowl. But after a restful night, the same people had no trouble telling the difference.

Bottom line: If everyone else seems crabbier, YOU need more sleep.

Sleep-deprived brains don’t even know they’re sleepy. Get this: A study found that when people slept less than 7 hours a night for a week, their cognitive performance nosedived – but it eventually returned to normal after getting at least 3 nights of so-called “recovery sleep.” However, when people got only 4 HOURS of sleep a night, it impaired their brain function…AND stopped them from feeling sleepy! Meaning, they stopped being AWARE that they were sleep-deprived.

Researchers from Columbia University found that well-rested people are better able to, and more likely to, turn down unhealthy foods than those who are sleep-deprived. And people who only sleep 4 hours eat 300 more calories per day.
