Try this mindfulness technique, no matter what type of exercise you enjoy. It comes from trainer Nora St. John: Every 5 minutes during your run, bike ride, or rowing session – take out your earbuds or pause your workout playlist, and tune into your breathing and body movement. Make sure nothing feels off or awkward, and correct it if it does. St. John says that will help you become a more efficient exerciser and help prevent injuries.

Get ready to be more energized and alert in 2 minutes with a simple breathing technique. It comes from Ayurvedic medicine, a type of holistic, whole-body healing developed 3,000 years ago in India. And it’s based on the idea health and wellness is physical, mental AND emotional.

So what’s the Ayurvedic breathing technique?  Sit or stand comfortably, and use a finger to press your LEFT nostril shut. Then, breathe in slowly through your RIGHT nostril and exhale slowly. That activates nerve endings in the right nostril linked to alertness. And in 2 minutes you’ll have renewed focus and energy.

When it comes to relieving stress, people say, “Take a deep breath.” But a deep EXHALE may be more crucial than a deep INHALE. Physical therapist Dr. Emily Kiberd says most people think deep breathing should be about taking IN more oxygen. But the stress-relieving oxygen doesn’t reach our bloodstream until we breathe OUT. So, try this: Inhale through your nose for a count of 4… Hold it for another 4 seconds… Exhale for 8 seconds. That’s in for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 8. That’ll calm your nervous system, relaxing you.

38% of people surveyed say they’ve had a panic attack. So what should you do if you have one? Well, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine says most panic attacks are over within 10 minutes. And here’s what to do during that time, according to psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman. She recommends finding a quiet room where you can breathe slowly and calm down. By moving to a new location, your brain will feel like it’s satisfied part of its stress response – by fleeing. It’ll think you’ve escaped danger and that’ll dial down the panic reaction. Then try repeating a calming mantra. Dr. Lieberman suggests something like, “This is harmless. This will be over soon.” If you’re hyperventilating – do the ol’ breathing into a paper bag trick. It rebalances the gases in your bloodstream. You can also try putting your head between your knees to get your blood flowing to your brain. And if panic attacks happen regularly, talk to a therapist who can help you cope.

Blame your smartphone. Not because the blue light it emits is keeping you awake… it’s because it makes you breathe less deeply! Scientists found that people who used their phones for more than 4 hours a day had lung function that was over 30% lower than those who used their phones less. And just so you know, the average teenager is on their phone 6 hours a day, so 4 hours isn’t a crazy amount!
So why would phone use lead to poor lung function? Because we hunch our shoulders and bend our necks when using our phones. So our airway is restricted and we’re not fully expanding our lungs. As a result, we breathe more shallowly.

Load these two classical pieces on your phone: Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and “Air on a G String” by Bach. Both are about 70 beats per minute – which mimics your resting heart rate. So listening to them can slow your breathing, and heart rate, to a calmer pace.

Inhale deeply, while raising your shoulders toward your ears. Then exhale slowly, and push your shoulders down. Repeat 5 times. Stress management experts say combining a shoulder shrug with deep breathing releases tension in our neck, shoulders and upper back. It also produces endorphins, which cancel out stress hormones, and reduce heart rate and blood pressure. Allowing you to literally shrug off your stress in under 60 seconds.

You know that urge you have to hold your breath when a car goes by, spewing exhaust? It’s a good instinct. Because when car exhaust reacts with sunlight, it creates ozone, which can cause breathing problems. And if we regularly breathe in exhaust, from rush hour traffic or jogging on a busy road, it can raise our risk for heart disease. So follow your instincts and hold your breath until the truck passes – and roll up your car windows during rush hour.

When your energy is low, make sure you have a tangerine – or tangerine oil – on hand. Taking 6 slow breaths of that scent activates the brain’s limbic system, producing energizing beta waves. And the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation says, within a minute, you’ll have less fatigue and more energy.

It’s not the stinky locker room you need to worry about at the gym – it’s the indoor air pollution! University of Lisbon research shows the air in weight rooms and studio spaces can be teeming with illness-causing pollutants. In fact, researchers found that 82% of the fitness centers tested had high levels of volatile organic compounds – or V‑O‑Cs. Which are released from the rubber mats, medicine balls, plastic-coated barbells, yoga blocks, and foam pilates noodles. They’re compounds that can irritate your airways, and even cause cancer. And since most of us breathe heavily at the gym, we’re more likely to breathe IN those contaminants.
